wanted to share a pic of one of the neighbor kids feeding the chickens, she has been working to make my free range flock more friendly, and is slowly turning them into pets. Scratch buffet anyone?

LOL!!! That is hilarious! I love it! I guess she has succeeded in making them more friendly. Any more friendly and they would be in the house!

Congrats on your hatches Tammy & wildriverswolf! Can't wait to see pics! I really want some Olive Eggers too! I'm trying to do a small flock this time and it's so hard because there are SO many I want!!!

My hatching is almost over, final 3 eggs are pipping, should hatch tonight.
I ended up with 13 Lavender Orpingtons (14th is pipping)
and 3 hatched blue copper marans, 2 more pipping.
Went back and checked my records and I started with 18 Lav Orp eggs and 9 Marans.
Pretty happy for mail order eggs!

I don't know about eggs, but I usually see cornish cross meat birds on craigslist for about $3 a piece.
Hatcheries they are $2-$3, but then you have all the shipping charges so I think it averages out to about $3 for the chicks
But I've only bought them twice so I may be wrong.
I got 10 of the cornish cross broilers on craigslist once for $30 then recently placed an order for 25 freedom rangers broilers for $68 after shipping.

Hey all!

I'm probably the only insomniac on here right now, but I have some hatching questions I'm hoping you experts can help me with!!!

#1 Do chickens have meconium??? (My last lavender orp was rocking, but then never hatched. When I was sure it was dead I put the egg in a ziploc and cracked the shell like I do all my non-hatches to try and learn more. The chick was fully developed, but dead. My first thought was it drowned in pipping, but the fluid that came out was slime green. I also noticed a couple of the chicks now in the brooder have the dark tar like excrement. I worked as a nurse in labor & delivery so I know all about human babies having this, but never though about it in other animals. I thought possibly it was meconium (or chicken version) that came out while pipping and killed the chick? I know in it can be life threatening to human babies if meconium is leaked into the amniotic fluid because the baby breathes it in and in worst case scenarios gets respiratory failure.

#2 Two additional chicks I had to take out of the shell for being dead were totally developed but died. There were no external pips, not sure about internal, but they looked like a normal developed chick. What could cause them to die? I know drowning is big is there a way to prevent that? Could taking out the auto egg turner at lock down have caused them problems?

Finally, but not a question, my lavender orpingtons have become homicidal to my poor blue marans! I moved them all to a brooder in my master bath so I can be close to them and when I went to the bathroom I found two of my marans face down in the waterer with lav orps standing on the back of their heads pushing them down! I pulled them out right away and tried to dry them, but it was too late they were cold :(

Thanks!
I'm not sure how far apart we are Michele, but I do have extras!
I wish I could, but I just don't have somewhere to put the babies. The ones that I have in the brooder now are almost 3 weeks, I think it would be problem to put them all together. I'm about 2 hours away, but I love going out for a drive, once in awhile.

Sorry I can't help with any of that, I've never hatched out any. I hope you figure out what's going on.

, but you can have the million and one tad poles if you can catch them in the grass.

I think the new chicks that hatched out the other day have webbed feet to deal with all the rain we've had every day
