Just in case nobody noticed it...it's raining. A lot.
We just had a torrential downpour!! I am SO sick of the rain, even more so now!!
I am sad to report that the downpour flooded our broody pen and tragically 6 out of our 8 duck eggs had started to pip, but were drown in this monsoon! DH managed to save 1 egg (1 mama threw out) and moved everyone to a drier/safe location, but knowing that had we been out just an hour earlier to check on her and her eggs, we would have been able to prevent this disaster. I feel HORRID and we had to keep our DD1 from looking...she has been waiting for her "birthday" chicks to hatch...

I didn't have the heart to tell her that 2 had hatched and died while 4 others had pipped and didn't make it. I feel just awful. I'm hoping the one lone egg hatches...otherwise, do you all have any advice for this broody? I don't want to put MORE duck eggs under her as I know that would be another 30-35 days of her sitting...I have another broody sitting on eggs, could I switch them (if the duck egg doesn't hatch)?? If we only get ONE duckling, is it okay to just have 1 or should we look for a companion? If we need a companion, does anyone have a young duckling that they'd be willing to sell?!?
SO needless to say, I am SICK of this rain!!

Our first day of furlough too.

It is nice having DH home, but we need the $ he normally makes. So since all the outside jobs are rained out we are indoors making chicken inventions! Fermented feed buckets and feeding troughs!
Sorry you all got furloughed too. We have been trying to use the time wisely and DH has been offered more jobs from friends that he/we will be able to keep up with. He does mechanic/handyman type stuff on the side. I help out with the easier stuff - when I'm not building coops

I have promised this is the LAST one... yeah, we'll see. I have not tried fermented feed, but have thought about it...

I thought those were outdoor showers... I have had 4 or 5 in the past two days!

Hello fellow North Carolinians. I'm a new member to BYC, and I'm kind of in this chicken craze... We use to have chickens (only Road Island Reds), but we had to get rid of them for a while and we now have three Cuckoo Marans; two hens and a rooster. We are wanting more, way more! My mother and I love large egg brown layers. We are looking for
  • Black Australorps
  • Jersey Giants
  • Possibly Lavender Orphintons
  • Possibly Brags Mountain Buff Tails

Really any breed that lays X Large to Jumbo brown eggs. Anyone know any good and reliable hatcheries that would have any of these breeds? I'm also open to different breeds if they lay Jumbo brown eggs! Wouldn't mind if we got some chicks that had really unique coloring, even if they don't lay giant eggs. Any suggestions?

P.S I live in the Concord area, in Cabarrus County, near Charlotte. We are willing to make a long day trip out of this if we need to, to get our chicks!

Oh and we are also wanting Guinea Hens, specifically French Guineas. We have found Ambers Poultry Farm, I believe in Sanford. Wouldn't mind going there, but was just wondering if there were any other places.

Can't wait to here what other chicken crazy people have to say and to get some Hatchery names and contacts! Thank you so much!

My husband is doing the same doing a tune up and detailing a boat for a friend in between downpours. I love the fermented feed. It is soo easy and the chicks all love it. I had to invent a trough feeder today so they wouldn't tip over the pan I was feeding them in. I used a window box planter and wrapped it in a feed bag to make it a little shallower and cover the holes. I also wrapped some support boards in feed bag and attached them to the bottom so they won't tip it over. Time will tell if this will work!

I just restarted my feed batch because the container I originally started it in was not big enough but I am excited about my new 5 gallon bucket setup.

Hello all! Checking in and catching up

. Since my last post we were tickled to (incubator) hatch 5 pretty little rhodebars 2 girls and 3 boys, July 4th babies! After one very inconsistent, mean as a snake, broody marans decided to change her mind and not be broody anymore...we were lucky enough to have a very sweet speckled Sussex go broody and she is sitting patiently on 7 eggs (variety of mamas with a handsome blue ameraucana roo) due we think in about a week. Soooooo do you all think we could put the July fourth babies in with her to raise? Or should we just keep them in the plastic brooder bin?

HN...if that baby still hasn't arrived...as Mom of 4 and Nana to 2...my best advice is to bake a pan of brownies by yourself and then eat the pan of brownies...by yourself

Yep...works every time!
Was sorry to hear about your duck eggs...

There is a breeder in Oakboro, The Nesting Box, which is in your neck of the woods. She has a website and there are pics of her coops and birds. I have no experience with her, but have considered buying from her as the website is set up nicely. As I am over in the Fayetteville/Raleigh area, it would be a pretty good drive for me. Good luck!
