So I (think) I have fabulous news!
My. Bojangles (the cat) jumped up on the dinner table tonight and started eating mac & cheese off my daughter's plate.
While I normally would not approve of such behavior, this is the first time in a week he has decided to eat anything!
I kept trying wet cat food and baby food roast beef with a syringe the past few days, but he just spit it out.
This is also the first time in quite awhile he got up and walked somewhere on his own without having to be carried.
So I'm super excited over here

(hope I'm not getting ahead of myself)

Kristan-- Love your profile pic by the way! I'm not making a recommendation since humidity is supposed to be kept low until lockdown, but my last hatch the humidity was between 65 & 75 and almost all hatched. I probably got lucky, but maybe it's something besides the humidity? I've only done 2 hatches-- one without an egg turner and one with. The one with I adjusted the temp to be slightly lower and placed the eggs farther from the motor. I had really good hatch rates for mail order eggs.

DST-- I'm so sorry for your losses. I love barred rocks! Good luck finding a home for your doggie

Side note-- my overpriced silkies from mypetchicken.com shipped today, should be here wednesday!!! I couldn't deal with another turning out to be a boy after I got attached so fingers crossed they are accurate on their sexing, since they're the only place I could find that sells female silkie chicks!
Thanks...I made that for my daughter for Halloween...she looked super cute!! Got lots of compliments.

1. What is still air vs. forced air?
2. yes, was keeping hum that high...have now backed it down ...its staying bout 40.

Unfortunately i am not able to manually turn my eggs through out the day.

I will try another batch with the CORRECT humidity...and if still no hatches...someone has offered for me to borrow their HovaBator. Wonder if I could rig something to raise the heating elements so they wont be so close to the eggs to avoid burning them up....???

Thank you all for all the help!!!!!!!!!!!
Kristen, Eggs only have to be turned three times a day. I turn them first thing when I get up, when I get home from work and again before bed and find that is sufficient.

Beth, since you are turning manually, how often do you turn?

Like CSB said. I am running the LG successfully. No turner..that fried the eggs. I put them in and roll them around couple Xs a day.
I run it DRY.. no water at all. Then at lock down add a small amount of water...raising the humidity to 40% ish. Have not had any problems.

I will agree 60% is WAY to high humidity. They are drowning.
This is making me re-evaluate my incubating methods. So, if you are running the incubator dry - what does the humidity gauge read? This totally flips everything I have heard on it's head (but I have not tried the dry method and I am a novice)... I have heard you have GREAT hatches! Oh wise one, please share your secret!

Crud, my hubby is not going to be happy, I want to start incubating/practicing again!

I turn the eggs 1 or 2 times a day.

What is the proper way to place the eggs in the bator and the correct way to turn them?

So you put NO water in bator until lockdown....What temps are kept during 1-18 days? Then what temp on lockdown with the 40% humid?

Does anyone breed show quality japanses bantams here? I'm looking for tri colors, blue or black mottled ,grey , duckwings.
Thanks for any help!
I've never messed with "show quality" breeds, but we have some friends that we are giving us some Ornamental Japanese Buff Black Tail Bantam pullets that hatched last month. Don't know if they are "show worthy" but they look really nice! I bet you could get some fertilized eggs from them, possibly some chicks...

PM me if you are interested at all. They are probably still breeding them.

Kristan--

This may be a stupid question, but are you sure the eggs are fertile?
If you've never gotten any to hatch it seems like it may be something besides humidity since I've had good hatch rates with crazy humidity and temp spikes.
Are you using your own eggs or mail order?
Do you open up the eggs that don't hatch at the end to see if they ever started developing?
I'm new to hatching and I always open all mine up to try and see what when wrong/when they stopped.

Good morning. Bantam is still alive but still sick. :-/ I'm really beginning to question if chickens get depressed. Maybe it misses its home and its other chicken friends. I know when I am depressed I get all sluggish and won't eat. ? Lol? I'm just not sure. Well it's official. We are moving. :-? Not sure how I feel about it. Now I gotta find some boxes. An now where in the "big" town of middlesex has any. Guess ill have to hit up the ABC store to get some boxes in bailey. :-/ thinkin about a yard sale this weekend. Get rid of some of this junk so its not so much to pack. And make a penny at the same time! ;)
