That really worries me. I will try to do some researching into it tomorrow. I lost my beautiful lavender orphington rooster about a month ago and called the Rollins lab to see how I could get him to them for a necropsy. He literally fell off a perch dead while I was gone to the grocery store. Perfectly fine and feisty as usual when I left and I found him dead on the ground when we got home! Not a mark on him - perfectly normal on the outside. It was devastating....he was strikingly beautiful and, unfortunately, I had not gotten around to breeding him with my lavender orp hens Turns out, I should have refrigerated him immediately. It was too late for the lab to do an accurate necropsy so I do not know what on earth happened. I am ready now if it happens again - hopefully it never will, but in reality I know these things happen. I will know what to do and who to call.

The ones I lost last year only 2 I could send, one died on a weekend ,the other day after Christmas. I too had everything the cooler, the form filled out , ice packs all I needed was more ice and drive to UPS, but the guy at Rollins advise me not to really. Couldn't say if they would be there or not when she arrived. I think they rather deal with more in the flock getting sick at the same time. When I said just one, kinda gave me the run around and told me he hate to see me waste my money if they were not there and if they couldn't find anything, but he did leave it up to me and I didn't.

Oh no! Mine are in boxes and are buried very deep. Sorry to hear about your lost also.

I bury mine in a gallon ziplock bag in a box so in case if its anything contagious and the dogs dig them up or if the bacteria or whatever gets in the ground it won't make all my other chickens sick. kinda morbid I know but I have OCD and completely a germaphobic! I already miss my little baby! She's usually on the porch at night waiting to come inside to go to sleep. Her brother was there but it will never be the same!

so sorry to hear about everyone's losses.
I have a chicken health/first aid question for the experienced people. I noticed a tiny dribble of blood on her beak, coming from right at the base of her comb where it touches the top of the beak. I managed to catch her and put her in isolation, bc I was worried the others might peck seeing the blood. Other than cleaning it off with some water, what else can I do for her? There wasnt an obvious open wound. I was giving them treats just before I came to work, so I didnt have lots of time to doctor her. I plan to go home and tend her in the morning when I get off work.

Thanks. I think overall we're doing ok- lost a single chick out of my lf order (44 ) and then 2 keets. That's a total of 5 of 74 this year. The cuckoo marans kill me because I think it was our fault- they were still confined in their very large coop. I think something freaked them out and they puppy-piled and then when they were down, they completely plucked the side facing up. I hate not knowing exactly what it was, but their run is put together enough to be out in it and the kids hacked in a pop door. We're still so overwhelmed with all the stuff we need to do. *sigh*

I piled some wood and tires over top, so hopefully that will do it.

I always use Blu Kote after the bleeding stops. They WILL go after anything a little bloody or different looking. The Blu Kote is an anti-fungal and will disguise the bloody area. I've heard Vetracyn works well, too. I take the top off and q-tip it on. Don't be afraid to seperate out, too, if you need to. The Blu Kote is in with the livestock stuff, fwiw.
