I LOVE the pic of Josh and the puppy!!!!!! And your flock, too.

Have a couple of questions....1.. My golden laced wyndotte is at least 9months and has not begun to lay.....anything wrong? 2...I give my ladies a small salad about every other day....greens, tomatoes, grapes, pumpkin seeds and crushed egg shells. Don't give it to them until the late afternoon....Is this too much ... too often? Also have oyster shell crushed and added to the feed.

I had two SFH sisters who were both 10 months old when they started laying.

Just checking in quickly to say hello! I've been absent a lot recently.....took on a second job, so my time at home is spent with the animals and getting stuff done.

Off to Uwharrie with the horses in the morning, so excited to get away!

Have a wonderful Sunday, everyone!

Got some exciting news, my silkie Amber is sitting on 9 eggs. She started this last Wed. How many can she get under her? I would mark her eggs so you can tell the new ones from the ones she is sitting, this way the chicks aren't too far part in hatch times. Remove new eggs daily. Right now she is in the coop but I think I'm going to move her on the 18th day and set her up in my little coop a rabbit hutch. Can this set-up stay in the pen with the other 2 after they hatch out or should they be some where else? Some times I can leave them and the other chickens won't bother them, other times the other chickens see a meal on the move and will go after them. So if you want to be safe, I would move them. Being she is providing the heat will I need a heat lamp? No heat lamp will be needed if she raises them. So many questions, my first with a mama hen. I think I read that you can wait 2-3 days before feeding is that right? I have food and water down from the time I move the hen and eggs (if they get moved) so that the hen can eat when ever she wants to. Chick starter will not hurt the hen. I will like to give them the Mareks shot. In the catalog it tells you to give it in the back of the neck at 1 day old. What size needle do you use? These are little bantams so I know they will be tiny. MPC will not give the shot to bantams because of this. Can't wait till the first part of Sept. and hope I have more hens then roosters

Wow haven't been there for a ride in a lllooonnnggg time, should be a great view for you. Hope you enjoy it.

I. I have them marked from the 14th day to the 24th. Is that to far apart? She did take one of the first ones out and we put it back in twice until the last time she did it we got rid of it. My understanding they know which ones are bad. Her sister is the one laying and it is like teamwork, she sits on them also. The other day both of them were on them. I will take the new ones out starting today. My hutch has a nest box on one side and a big space on the other side for food and water.. My Jap. Bantam stayed in there for a while until we got her pen built. I could leave the door which is wire shut and take her out like I do now for exercise and have the baby food and water set up in the hutch and when they get older move them to my big brooder box so they will have more room to run around. We'll see how it goes. Still not sure about the shot, a friend of mine said she would do it for me, since I never have. What I have seen in the catalogs the bottle is so big, enough for a 1000 shots. Sure dont' need that much. I wonder if TSC sells it? Going there soon for chicken stuff and hopefully birthday shopping, My birthday is Thursday.

Here's a small article from My Pet Chicken that addresses using a timer.  I think they need about 15 hours a day.

We use an aquarium timer- it maintains temp and cycles on and off. We plug right into our (red) brooder light. You can find them at pet stores. Not necessarily a 'cheap' item initially, but I do think it saves $$$$ in the long run. And it gave me peace of mind knowing they wouldn't cook even though we had a huge brooder and could get away from the light........

You lucky dog, you...........have fun!!!!!
Yes I have to say that I was a lucky dog. Seats were just past the start/finish line. Daughters first race and she seemed to enjoy it. Got home around 3am this morning. Asked him if he wanted some eggs or a chicken as payment then we laughed because he has around 40 chickens and a wild turkey on his farm.

Gonna be a long day. Have to finish school shopping and mow 2 yards today. Hope everyone has a great day.

I finally got some pictures of our flock with the new addition - Victor, the Ameracauna/EE rooster. Named after the character in the movie "Victor/Victoria" since he was a guy pretending to be a girl when we got him. LOL He's SO gorgeous, but it's really hard to get a picture of him that shows his amazing colors!
