I'm probably going to catch some slack for this, as your dogs seem to be family members (and I am an animal lover believe me), but the day my dog killed one of my hens was the day he left. I mean it was kinda the straw that broke the camel's back-- we got him from the shelter and training wasn't working he was jumping on the kids, chewing things, but the chicken thing did it for me I found him a new home that day. No more dogs for me, we like to go away too much. Sticking with my poultry, cats and the little animals the kids have.

Actually you won't get slack from me. We rescued our dogs too and my husband and I have provided a good home for them all. The older one we have is wonderful and gentle. It is just irritating that we invest so much into them and sorry, to say, the two younger are just a pain. I am liking my chickens a bit more then those two rascals right now. Not to mention, they mess the house, all the sudden they have forgot they are trained to go outside and have decided our living room is a war zone for their messes. My husband is self-employed so he is home a lot, so it isn't like they are left alone all day. He is pretty irritated with them as well and we are thinking a lot about it. We love dogs, rescued two cats (outside and not troublesome), but three is two much to have in the house. We have over two 1/2 acres and built a large farm fence in the back so they have plenty of room to roam - even though we have a no-leash law in our county. Our one neighbor was complaining she didn't want them coming in their yard, so out of respect, we spent the cash to keep in our yard, but have room for them to run. The one that got our hen has escaped a few times and even was gone for two days after the 4th of July, due to being scared from the fireworks. Not to mention they destroyed the trim and wall in our laundry room while we were at our town's 4th of July fireworks. Agree too, always hard to go anywhere overnight.

For us, our dogs are family. The turkeys are livestock. An easy choice for me. The chickens I place a higher value on than the turkeys, but still, livestock. It's therefore my responsibility to protect them from predators. All of them, including the ones I own. My choices on the turkeys were to get rid of them or pen them. Penning them negates my entire reason for keeping livestock. I want free-range meat and eggs. If I pen them, then my product is little different from grocery store meat. So, they went. The chickens have pasture, and we ended up lining the field fence that was there for the sheep and goats with chicken wire, so they can't go through. Yeah, it took several rolls of wire, and I still have to clip some wings to train them, but it's rare that ones come over into the yard.

Plus, with those turkeys gone, I will once again get to eat the grapes, figs, gooseberries and raspberries we grow! Yay!

Everyone has to do what's right by them.

Good morning folks

CSB, hope you heal up quickly! I generally pay for a few days after doing too much... but that doesn't stop me from doing it.

x2.. All my dogs are predators. It is hard to resist a real live squeaky toy.

My dog is my family. She lives in the house and goes almost everywhere with me. BUT every animal I have....has a job, they earn their keep. Pepper's job is to keep me company and do what I ask. Part of my expectations is for her to not eat the "family" (chickens, ducks, goats, anything else I bring home). This is a German Shepherd with a STRONG prey drive. Do I expect her to be perfect when not supervised? No....so I don't leave her unsupervised with the stock.

The new puppy has to live within the same expectations. When friend's bring their dogs over....same expectations.

Jollie, do your dogs get organized exercise? Do they understand "NO"? Are they destroying property while supervised or while on their own?

Yeah I just got a new one that mmm don't mind cats or little dogs but wants to bark at my other big dog (after my big dog barked and growled at him). Yesterday he wanted the "moving squeaky toys" ...today so far he's not so interested in them. Now I just hope I can find his owner or a new home since I can't keep his loving little bottom. Anyone need a kid loving young male dog???

Another lovely day is on tap for us to enjoy.

We have decided to try growing our own hothouse
tomatoes this year and see how it goes. We are also
going to try leaf lettuce and spinach with the tomatoes
so we can have fresh salads throughout the winter
months. Not sure how well it will work out but we'll
never know if we can if we don't try.

hope everyone has a good day
