I just was told of this forum and thought I would drop in to say hello. I live south of Burlington and currently considering getting some guinea hens and possibly quails still doring research before I purchase anything. I dont plan on selling eggs just using them for myself. My husband wants guinie hens to help with the ticks but I like quails. Does anyone no if we can keep them in a coop together. Any iformation would be great at this time. I am still reading different post to become as educated as possible. Would like to get some for his birthday in March so I know I have some time to get coop built and decide.

I wouldn't mix guinea and quail. I have never had guinea myself, but learned from the neighbor and others that they love to get hit on the road. Chickens will effectively clean your yard of all kinds of bugs, toads, lizards, snakes (up to a cretin size) and the sort, and are a little more manageable then what I have heard guineas are. But hopefully the ones here with/have had guineas will tell you about theirs.

Banriona, congrats on the eggs! What kind/size of dog is Molly? That'll help with wheelchair suggestions. I know they make them to sell these days, but back when I was a vet tech, we made them for our patients. If you and your hubby are handy, you might want to examine the mass-produced ones and make your own. We had lightweight metal bars we bent for framing and I wouldn't have a clue where to find that these days, but depending on how big she is and how much weight it needs to support you may be able to find something you can use at a hardware store or builders supply. The body sling is easier, as are purchased wheels. Just a thought.

Had a hawk take down another bird today. We don't have any cover in that pasture. Need to get cover out there when hubby gets back from his current trip.

Got an award from the student atheletes at Faculty Appreciation tonight. Warm fuzzies for me!

She's a med/small dog. Weighs 30lbs. Will get her wheelchair measurements next time I take her out to pee. Hate to disturb her any more than necessary. She sure is a trooper! Looks better today than yesterday. Brought her home earlier and she's settled in next to my bed. She ate her normal sized dinner and is drinking plenty. Actually asked to go out to pee too. I reckon that's a good sign.

We actually found an ex co-volunteer at the animal shelter I used to volunteer at who has a doggie wheelchair she said we could borrow. Yay! Will buy us time until we can buy or build our own. Hubby and I got 400 of the 500' underground dog fence down today. Will get the rest tomorrow and then build her a wheelchair ramp for the deck.

So sorry about the hawk! Congrats on the award though! That's super cool!

[Coop Scoop Boogie]

Good morning folks

Our young girls are starting to lay more. We are up to
1 1/2 - 2 dozen per day now. I'm sure that by the time
the weather warms up we will be in a dither with so many
eggs but they will all have a use one way or another. It
does get to be a bit much when there are dozens of eggs
every day.

Guinea and Quail DO NOT MIX.
Quail should be housed in above the ground hutches or wire cages. The should only be kept with other Quail. And not let out to free-range.

Guineas are very loud and will travel to neighbors and get into the road. They like to roost high up and probably won't go back to the coop after a while. They also dig holes in your lawn and gardens. That being said...I LOVE my Guineas. Just be prepared for them. And if you have close neighbors, you should consider them also.

As mentioned, chickens will eat just as many bugs as Guineas. Have much better personality (IMO), produce more eggs. (Guineas are seasonal layers & Quail lay tiny eggs) They also will go back to the coop at night and are better when contained in a run. Of course they will still dig up your lawn and gardens. LOL

Banriona, glad Molly's appetite is up now she's home! And it's spectacular that you have a wheelchair you can borrow. Hope she doesn't need it long. I dread a back injury on one of my Boys. We would not physically be able to care for him, nor get him in and out of a wheelchair. I'm glad for your sake that Molly is a small dog.

My hens have also increased egg production, now that they have finally finished molting! Between that and weather, I was glad for my break from work over the holidays. I would have been hard pressed to keep up with my egg customers at work!

January is half over. March will be here before you know it!

My guineas are coop trained, so they come home and put themselves to bed. They do less damage than my chickens, but I have room for them to travel. They are *loud*, for sure. And they will go into the road.

I absolutely adore my guineas!
