That is a great idea & thank you. I am not sure that would be for us as we have over 20 pens...lol, we are in the process of building a chicken house, so we can heat it in the winter & will be easier on me & the birds...lol. My husband is a welder fabricator & has built us a very large outdoor wood furnace to heat it with. So hopefully next winter we won't have to thaw water..lol

Good morning folks

Another cold morning to greet the day. It occurs to me as
I watch my breath whisp in front of me while I step outside
that it's not so much the cold itself that has me grumbling but
the stiff joints that now speak to me with little squeaks of aching.
It's that fact that the cold air has me inside more than I use to
be, it's that I don't enjoy it like I use to when I was younger. We
need this cold to help reset nature and I hate to say but we need
more water or it's going to be one dry, hot summer. I'd rather it be
snow.......not ice if it's going to be frozen......but rain is best.

I got tired of having to haul hot water out every morning to thaw out the 5gal bucket of water in the chicken coop. Their setup is a hanging 5gal bucket with chicken nipples on the bottom so sitting it on a warmer wasn't an option. Finally decided on an aquarium heater. It's designed for a 10 gallon tank, but is doing just fine out there keeping the five gallons nice and cozy. Fully submersible and has an automatic sensor to shut it off if the water level drops below the heater level. So far it's kept the water nice and cozy ever since I put it in there. My main concern is that the lowest setting on it is 65 which is warmer than I like for bacteria control but can't win everything. Cost me around $30 with shipping from amazon but for what it's saving my back and whatnot from having to haul hot water out every day it's a worthwhile investment. Don't know if something like that would work for you, but thought I'd throw it out there for anyone it may help. All I do now is keep it topped up above the heater level and then clean out the water once a week or so as needed.

I wonder if heat tape would work around a bucket? I use the 5gl bucket with nipples on the bottom also. I have been hauling hot water out...what are thoughts on heat tape?
