Orpingtons are bred for cold, so should do well. It doesn't get as cold in this part of the state, but they are still out in it unless it's windy. You can put Vaseline on the roos combs to protect them against frostbite.

No heat for any birds at my place. Not even youngsters..hatched in Oct. or itty bitty Seramas.

Mine are in a 3 sided coop with the roost there. All of mine are cold hardy and warm hardy.... 2 RIR,...1 Brahma, 1 golden laced wyndotte....the only heat I furnish is several brooder lamps located on the wire area outside the coop. No contact with any wood or flammable. Its just enough to allow whatever heat to rise to the coop above. (my coop has been raised up so that the girls have some run area underneath. Its my little Ft. Knox and very safe. They have been laying well all winter thru these cold spells...They are about a yr old now but haven't gone thru molt yet...Hope it holds off until spring! Can't stand the thought of their little naked bodies running around in the snow!!

The cold weather definitely makes everything harder. The water is frozen every morning it seems!

Water frozen in the morning is one thing, but staying frozen is another matter! Hauling water for the chickens and rabbits is okay, but the cows just drink the stuff like it's....water!
