North Carolina

Everyone out there seemed fine even in this frigid weather. At least, as BHep said, it's not windy! The cows were unhappy at cold water, but at least they have water. Even the water in the Juvenile Detention Center froze, and there are heat lamps still in there. I'm on delay and don't have to leave until about 11:00, so will do another water run before I leave. Chris will beat me home and do one then, and I'll do another when I get home. That'll be about dusk, so will be the last for the day.

And tomorrow, I have company coming! Oh, my!

Mine are all still kicking also. The only thing that has slowed down is my broody hen. She hasn't chased me down, stomping her foot at me demanding food for 2 days now. Been kinda nice lol. Good luck with the company :)

Well, it got down to 2 degrees here in Red Oak last nite....have been keeping warm water in the coop about 3 x day. I did freeze last night...even the little nipples! I have had to break the ice on top before but today I had to wiggle them loose again. It helped when I added the warm water. However, my coop is so closed in. Its a 3 sided coop with an open run. I have taken some old windows that I use to paint scenes on and propped them up around the hardware cloth and a couple on top where the moisture usually comes in.. After that I wrapped it in one of those blue tarps. I have 3 brooder lights located on the outside of the wire, underneath the coop (touches nothing flammable). I know they don;t give off a lot of heat but anything right now is better than nothing. I've been racking my brain to figure if there is anything else I could do to protect them. Their combs looked good this morning and they were moving around good. Besides that....I had 3 eggs warm and waiting for me. I only have 4 ladies so I took that as a good sign of their health

I am really open to any constructive suggestions.

This is my first winter with chickens and it has really been a doozy!

Have most of my driveway shoveled out. My 3 bigger kids are moving the slush. They part closest to the carport (where my van is) is still frozen solid. Maybe tomorrow when it warns up some more.
I have no plans to go out anyway....I am sick too !
