Ohmygoodness. We have some eggs in the incubator that I firmly was NOT expecting to hatch. They were under a broody who gave up on them and so they had a long period of cold and then wild temperature fluctuations while we got the incubator set up. But I kept them in there and have been turning them and all just in case... And while working from home today, DH heard the peeping and we have one healthy (so far) baby hatched and another sticking his/her beak out of the shell right now. What a fun snow day this is turning out to be. Check out this little muppet.

............and schools are closed again tomorrow......
here too and we got more less than you all,,, We've had just enough rain to wipe out a great deal of the depth of ours... See some grass sticking thru. The ruts of our vehicles are all grass. I know that it will probably freeze a little tonight but.....

This morning when I went out to feed and water the chickens, who have NO desire to come outside. We had 10 inches with another 3-5 coming this afternoon.

It wouldn't be so bad but my DH is on call this week and he has to stay in Greensboro. Thank God we haven't lost power! I hope everyone stays warm and safe.

Stay safe and warm! My dear ladies (only 4) are mad because I didn't just hop right up and run out there. LOL I had made sure there were ok before I shut them up. But about lunch I took them some warm oatmeal, cranraisins, topped with greens. You would think they would get over it!!! Getting ready to go back out and redo their feeder, take some warm water and check the eggs one more time... They better cough up some more eggs! LOL

I for one am glad the schools are closed. Most schools have only 1 grounds keeper if
they are lucky and that is a lot of area to de-ice for 1 or even 2 people....just not safe
to try to walk in the parking lots, sidewalks and steps much less try to wheel a bus on
slick roads with other drivers who have little idea of how to keep a BIG distance away
and go slow. Another reason is I fell again today and this time I managed to over stress
my artificial knee and need to rest it a bit.......would be nice to not have to walk on it much.

I hate being so klutzy to fall twice in one day and I was being careful........I need airbags and
not the ones in the bra ( I know what them guys are thinking )

You have made me very aware of the work of the grounds keepers.....I have been a teacher, a coach and a school bus driver...forgive me for thinking along those lines. I do however, have a balance problem that should have made me think thru this...school cancellation thing. You do not need to be out there to fall and break something. I really glad you don;t have to be there! I would be the first to bust my .....you know what !!!! Hope all is clear by Monday!!! and I agree about my need for airbags not being in my bra.

Just popping in to say hello. Hope everyone is staying safe and warm!

Question for you guys... Chickens have a coop that is 64sf, and will have a run that is 100' x 50' (I think). They'll be spending most of their time outdoors, weather permitting. How many chickens (hens only) would you keep in that set up?

I know I want at least 6-8 more to go with my current 9. Not sure 17 hens wouldn't be too much for that coop. Everything is up off the floor, roosts, nesting boxes, food/water etc. Would appreciate y'alls thoughts on that one. Trying to get all my spring builds planned.
