Getting used to this site, thought I'd say Hi in the local.

Welcome to the best group on BYC! Jump right in!

Picked up the first of the beef from the processer this morning. Got one one cow to pick up on Friday, and then it's done. We won't do beef again this year, but probably the next. Grilled T-bones for supper!

Hey everyone!
welcome-byc.gif
new BYCers!

It's been a crazy week for me. Lost two pullets about a week ago to either a raccoon or possum (or both???). The one night I spaced and forgot to close up the chicken coop, something took two pullets, one in the middle of the night, and another one just about dawn. One was an EE/production red mix and the other one was an EE/BO mix. On top of that, the behaviorist I've been working with to get my dog to stop being so fearful of my husband, told me that since things are getting worse (Bella bit hubby), that we either need to rehome her to a single person, or euthanize her. Not happy about that at all, so I'm trying to find a home for her, since she's great with me and my kids.

The behaviorist said it's nothing my DH is doing, just for some reason Bella has it in her head that she can't/won't trust DH. She's been like this for the entire year we've had her, maybe due to something happening in her previous home.

Hoping the rest of my week gets better! Hope you all have a great week! Really enjoying this weather, it's so warm!

Oops. I bought 3 khaki campbell ducklings. I couldn't help myself!!!! @bantambury

Ugh the suspense is horrible for my eggs too... I keep checking thinking maybe some will pip today but alas not even an internal pip! I did put them in lockdown though. I just can't help but keep checking! I bet they will all hatch tomorrow before I get home from work! Just my luck but probably the best thing to come home to. ;)

My brooders are READY. My big one with the ducklings and my small one for my hatchlings tomorrow. I finally have discovered the wonderous qualities of plastic bins turned into brooders. Thanks @tammyfarms for planting that seed. :)

Hi Everyone, I have been absent again. It has been a busy spring. I have been working overtime at work and then come home to chicken duty and many, many chicks. I hatched a bunch about 6 weeks ago, sold some of them and hatched more two weeks after that and again last weekend. I am guessing I have uhhhh, let me do some quick math... 41 between 5 weeks and 4 days old.

If anyone is looking for an incubator I have to mention that I LOVE my GQF, it is an older model that I bought about three months ago. The fertility rate with these chickens has been great and hatch rates really improved with the new incubator.

If anyone is looking for Buff Orpingtons or EE chicks, I have plenty to sell. PM me if interested.

SD - I love my bin brooders, hubby had a big tub that he was going to throw out because it was cracked. I told him that I could use it and put the latest batch of chicks in it. I am really glad we kept it because it is quite a bit bigger than the one I was using. This latest batch of chicks is 25, the most I have hatched at one time.

As I sit here typing, I can hear the babies chirping... I just love baby chicks!

@Lizabelsherrill - sorry to hear you lost one of the hens

I hope the others are doing well. I ended up keeping one of the lavender roosters as he is just so sweet. He is by far the tamest roo I have ever had. He is in with my RIR and Leghorn hens to make EE's and super blue egg layers. I second what Hollow said, the lighter birds are magnets. I am concerned about the SBELs and hawks as they are mostly white. I usually only free range for an hour or two a day when I am home. I have had hawks attack chicks in the covered run though.

Have a great rest of the week everyone!
