North Carolina

I'm only a few days ahead of you then! Good luck :D

Edit:
My husband will be in charge of the lockdown, my son & I have to travel out of town that day for his MRI. I was thinking to make a special account just for him in case he needs support while they hatch lol! I'm gonna miss out on the most exciting part

Good luck with yours too! :D

The flock swap at the TSC on Raeford Rd is awful!  (It's right around the corner from my house).

We went to a flock swap there last year. We were brand new to chickens and took our first ones home that day. A man there was very helpful to us newbies. He even had us follow him home so we would have more to choose from. He sold us 3, 3 month old sex link pullets and a 4 month old buff orpington pullet. We lost the "sex links" to snakes. The buff orp turned into a very ornery rooster that is still the bane of my existence. Looking back on the photos from when I got them now, I can say they weren't red sex links they were little cockerels too. The buff was closer to 2 months than 4 and all roo. I really can't stand being lied to. The good news is, I won't make that mistake again.

This is what I hate about the chicken business. So many take advantage of people who don't know about enough about chickens. I've seen them sell chickens and chicks for 3 times what they're worth and make up all kinds of lies to sell them. They also don't have any problem selling a sick unhealthy bird to anyone, one time my parents gifted me a pullet they bought at a swap that had scaly legs.

Good morning folks

Quote: I have seen some tell some big lies to sell birds, and they not only hurt their sales down the road, they hurt everyone's. I know of one guy who as quit going to the swaps because of all the lies he's told. He just moves to the next swap for awhile or makes a new swap in a new area. That's why when ever I have birds to sell, I tell anyone looking to feel free to ask questions. I can't lie to someone just for a sale, I feel too bad about it and there's no need for it. I'll get adults and kids that will just ask general chicken questions to questions about other peoples birds. I don't mind answering them if I know the answer, as I figure the more they know the better for them and the birds if they get any. But there is always used car sales men in every aspect of life. Which is why I always suggest that people do some research on what a bird looks like from egg, chick, teen, to adulthood if they know what breed they want.

Not all the sellers are bad, most at the Cedar Creek swap are pretty good.

On flock swaps: I hate being lied to as well and it has definitely happened to me before. I write up little info sheets on my birds and give buyers my email or phone number so if they have any questions down the road they can contact me. :) I want potential buyers to trust me and not have to deal with the bad experiences I have had at flock swaps when I was first starting out. :)
Happy St Patrick's Day! Gotta make sure I wear green ;)
Stay warm!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the newbies.

Cedar Creek flock swap is only the first Saturday of the month? I've got to downsize on all the ducks, not keeping as many as we planned-- White Pekins, Runners, & Swedish-- they're huge and are eating twice a day. We're leaving for Florida the end of the month and the person I hire to care for my animals while I'm gone can only come in the morning, so I need less to spread the feed longer.

This weather is really putting a damper on my plans to finish up outdoors. In the 5 years we've been down here I've never had to wait this long to garden! We're going to Hope Mills to pick up truck loads of year old composted manure, but the wet weather keeps pushing it back :(

I've been busy though-- Tilled & fenced a 600sq ft mini corn field, built two 300 sq ft raised veggied beds, and working on some raised flower beds for the front yard. Not much compared to ya'll with farms, but I'm hoping to get quite a bit of food grown for our little family. Working on an enclosure for some rabbits now too, my husband's next venture in home raised food, we will see!

Hope everyone's doing well. I'm like 150 posts behind so I have to go back and read. I hear they're calling for SNOW again Tuesday, keep warm!!!
