North Carolina

Say NO to more snow, argh!! I guess we are in the same boat as everyone else.

We planned to garden this weekend but finishing up the coop took too much time before the rain started. Now with the cold weather kinda glad we did not plant.

We do have broccoli, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, peppers and such in the greenhouse though. Thinking about just seeding others indoors in the smaller pods and putting them in the greenhouse too.

Of course we are also delayed because we can't seem to get our usual mulch because wetness has kept anyone for getting into the Wilkes Rd site.

I assume everyone know you can get a truckload of triple screened mulch at Wilkes Rd for $10? It is quality stuff, used one load need two more.

Did you build your own green house?
I've been wanting to do that for awhile, but one of the projects we haven't gotten to yet.
Though I must say we are starting to run out of space haha!
I may have to look into the mulch.

Recent weather and desperate predators have been extremely unkind this week, leaving our flock down to one tough survivor. We are getting ready to raise a new flock of chicks, as we do every time at this point of the year.

I've been lurking BYC for about two years, just made an account! You all have wonderful advice.

new flocker, sorry about your recent loss.

I have seen some tell some big lies to sell birds, and they not only hurt their sales down the road, they hurt everyone's. I know of one guy who as quit going to the swaps because of all the lies he's told. He just moves to the next swap for awhile or makes a new swap in a new area. That's why when ever I have birds to sell, I tell anyone looking to feel free to ask questions. I can't lie to someone just for a sale, I feel too bad about it and there's no need for it. I'll get adults and kids that will just ask general chicken questions to questions about other peoples birds. I don't mind answering them if I know the answer, as I figure the more they know the better for them and the birds if they get any. But there is always used car sales men in every aspect of life. Which is why I always suggest that people do some research on what a bird looks like from egg, chick, teen, to adulthood if they know what breed they want.

Not all the sellers are bad, most at the Cedar Creek swap are pretty good.

I REALLY ENJOYED THE URBAN CHICKEN IN RALEIGH.. WHAT I SEEN THERE THE TIME WE WENT LOOKED HEALTHY

Quote: When looking for healthy birds, I look at the eyes, ears, nose, legs, comb, and weight (per the breed and age of bird). I don't look so much at feathers as those can get broken for many reasons and the chicken won't regrow a broken feather until they molt. They will however regrow a feather that is flat missing before they molt. Just out of curiosity, what do you look at when looking for a healthy bird?

I've had a really rough week too. Something got 2 of my guineas and a hen. I'm hoping the hardware cloth that I put up yesterday will keep the rest of my flock safe. It's hard to lose them. I'm very sorry for your losses. I hope you have better luck with this year's chickens!

Welcome! Glad you spoke up! Sorry about your losses. I think the weather has increased predator looses. Their regular food is not as available.
