Another hot day is in store.......time to get the cover
off the puddle. I'm keeping some of the grandbabies
tonight and I'm sure they will be very happy to help
me out with the puddle. Tomorrow we pack everyone
up along with some yummy food and go visit great
friends for the afternoon. Life is good.

Talking genetics I have been looking at pundit squares, charts, ect. But it confuses me, and I had to resort to asking my kids for help. But I was wondering if allowing my polish, silkies, and hamburgs to share the same run & coop will I get successful crosses?

Most of my chicks hatching this time are under developed hatching early and dieing I've done nothing different than I did the past three back to back hatches

Hey there!
That sucks!
I would check to see if now since the weather has warmed up maybe your incubator temp is too high=underdeveloped.
U can try putting a thermometer on top of ur eggs and see what it says. Maybe turn it down a lil see if that helps.
Could maybe be that they were already too warm like 103 or something early in the incubation or something??
Let me know what u find out

I don't use the thermometer on the incubator, I use a digital one and it's been right on 99.5- 100. I have about 20% looking good, but that's the 2nd worst I've ever had at 5 day candling. It's possible they got too hot in transit, but I had eggs sent here all last July & Aug which was much hotter than now. I just have so many with broken yolks and badly detached air cells. I wait until day 10 before pulling anything out, but it's not looking too good. Pretty disappointed because these were some of the most expensive eggs I've ever gotten.

You'll get successful crosses. It's just a what crossed with what to what you could end up with. IE most silkie crosses have a little crest and 5 toes, blue earlobes and all f1 are hard feathered. Most polish crosses have a small crest. Size of crested parent's crest does help determine the amount of the crossed offspring crest from what I have seen. So if the silkie or polish has a little crest, the offspring might only have a few feathers that stick up some, on the other hand if the crested parent has a big crest, the offspring could end up with a decent sized crest.

Hope this helps you some.

It's a week today, I just re-candled.
50 some went in.
I pulled out 22 that clearly never started developing and opened them all up to be sure, and I was right.
12 are looking perfect for Day 7 so I think if it were the 'bator it would be all of them, no? I have had excellent hatches in the past so I'd be less inclined to think it was that.
I have 8 BCM eggs in there that are so crazy dark I haven't bothered to candle yet, they're still in there.
Then I have 16 more in there I marked with X's as I think they are no good, but not quite ready to pull until I triple check on Day 10.

My thinking would be rough shipping or possibly xrays in UPS or lower fertility than sellers thought? Anyone with more experience think it may be something else? If it were a temperature issue wouldn't they have at least started and quit? The 22 I opened were completely clear, no blood spots or rings or anything like that, they never started at all.
The boxes they arrived in were damaged.

Lol I have 2 and a hydrometer and all was well that's what confuses me lol I've been hatching for over 13 years and never had a hatch like this without it being attributed to a power outage or something like that
