Gardeners and those that understand plant genetics--
I have a gardening question, can't find the answer anywhere hoping someone can help me out.

At the end of the season we tilled the tomato garden to let it rest. I now have at least 100 1-2 ft tall tomato plants in there. I didn't think they would grow back! I guess when they would go bad and hit the ground the seeds got in and were tilled. The tomato plants I started this year in cells a month or so ago are super tiny, too small to even go in the ground. My husband said to just thin out the ones already in there, but I think only one variety was heirloom most the smaller tomatoes and colored tomatoes I could only find hybrid seeds for. If the plants were hybrid and they regrew now would I be able to get tomatoes off them?? I'd hate to rip up all these plants if I could get something out of them, but I'd hate to also grow them all the way out with no yield, especially how late I got started this year with our winter.

THANK YOU!

Oh, and some of them have flowers on it. Don't know if that automatically means they can reproduce though. I thought I remember seeing that hybrid seeds couldn't be reused (which is probably why most the seed places on sell hybrids so you come back every year). I know the beefsteaks were heirloom, but the purples and yellows and jelly beans that my kids like only came in hybrid.

Hybrid seeds will grow, but they won't breed true. So you have no idea what kind of tomatoes you'll get. If it was me, I'd thin them out and let some grow and also plant some that I know I want. But I love tomatoes!

I don't have the regular Cuckoo Marans; just the Goldens. Just FYI, they aren't ones you'd want to breed to regulars, or to any other Marans. They are more recent imports. But I have some from a month or so on down to more due to hatch Wednesday. I've been doing weekly hatching. Next week will be my last for a bit. Pm if you want more info. I should get pics of the chicks, too!
I don't do the breeding anyway....did the chick thing this year as a favor to my DD.....but NO MORE!!!! I would rather have the young pullets and know what I'm getting.

Okay, thank you so much for explaining that to me (and explaining the chicken coloring genetics)!
I will keep some and add some new ones.
As long as I get tomatoes off of them, I don't really care what kind they are. I love tomatoes too, when I'm outside I just pick them off the plant and eat them like I would an apple

Does anyone pickle their eggs? If so can you share with me your procedure? I have a good recipe, but after 2-3 weeks my cans started leaking. I boil them with a touch of baking soda to peel easy. Make my rind. Peel eggs then can them. Should I boil the cans after I put everything together?
Thanks

Too bad you live so far away. I have some 3 months olds and i'm only keeping a few for egg laying purposes. I'm gonna do a final giant hatch this month and i'll have more birds than i'll know what to do with.

Sorry farmraised  :(

Soup kitchen would be a good idea, but I don't know if they will take homegrown eggs there may be some sort of regulations on that, I don't know.

On topic of eggs, has anyone found people not wanting your blue & green eggs???  I was pretty shocked, the colored eggs are always my favorite.  So many people have told me they won't eat them because its weird?  The little bit that I'm selling I don't even put any of the colors in anymore just do the real huge brown ones from my Orpingtons and a few really dark from the Marans.

Yep. I have a guy that didn't want them. Strange.

My awesome son graduates from Appalachian State University tomorrow! Woohoo! This mom can't get any prouder! Plus, he also got a biology degree, following in my footsteps. Now to see what he's going to do with it! Well, first stop will be five weeks in Vietnam catching snakes. Then....the world better look out! Another one of my kids about to take it by storm! Hope he goes on for his graduate work, but I think he'll want a break first.

Just needed to brag a bit!

Congratulations! I am right there with you! My daughter graduates this week too! Woot-woot! Her degree is in Equine Science, with concentrations in business mgt, training, lessons and riding, not quite as marketable (IMO) as biology, but at least she made it!
