Oh wow, thanks!

I was thinking like 3 haha.t
Well they'll have less than 12 as I don't have enough for all of them to get that many, but glad to know they can hatch that many.
Thank you for the feedback!!!  :thumbsup

My Splash Orpington went broody and I put 6 eggs under her, thinking that was too many. Well now I have a buff who has gone broody and she has under her 4 bantam eggs and 6 big eggs under her. Never had a hen go broody until this spring, when all of a sudden five decided to go broody all at the same time... :barnie
they also seem to catch it over here...One hen starts setting and gives the other hens the idea...I'm not sure if it isn't like how sometimes you don't want to get off the couch... The hens just decide nah I'm ma stay right here until something happens...lol

I've got 13 broodies right now, in four different hen houses. The Ameraucanas are the worst, with six broodies. Then three Welsummers. And the rest are assorted Orpingtons. My egg production is obviously way off. And I don't have a place to put a broody to let her sit safely. :( Might try my breeding pens, but I think chicks could get out of there too easily. Hmmmmm.....

I still have a very large dog with diarrhea, despite being on meds. I think I'll be sleep deprived forever. :(

Hope your Saturday is lovely!

Oh no, I didn't even think about when the chicks hatch!!!

All my hens are just in the regular nesting boxes (which is making everyone else mad and instead of using the empty ones they sit on top of the broodies and lay their eggs!)
And one Olive Egger who is in my rabbit pen!
It's high enough the rabbits can't jump it, but she's one of my best fliers and goes in. A few weeks ago she started laying her eggs in the rabbit house and wouldn't get off of them. So I'd go get the eggs and bring her out of the pen and I'd turn around and she'd be back in there sitting. Sits on her nest she made all day, all night whether there are eggs or not. And the rabbits don't bother her and she doesn't bother the rabbits. I had to put layer feed in there because she had started just eating rabbit pellets to stay next to this nest she made.
So the other day I put 6 lemon cuckoo orp eggs under her. She will get up briefly to get a drink. She flies over the fence to poop (won't do it in the rabbit pen) and is right back on those eggs.

I have always used a brooder then a grow out tractor. so this didn't even cross my mind.
Now I'm worried if I move the nests they won't sit on them.
Should I just take the babies from them and put them in the brooder when they hatch?
I think that might upset my hens.
I need to get building then, what type of set ups do you use as brooders with hens???

Back when I had a very mixed flock, I would let the mom raise her babies in the flock. Now, they are free-pastured, so plenty of space. Nowadays, since I have birds I don't want to risk, if I give any to the mom wannabes, it'll be in a breeding pen. I just have to make them chick-proof first. I don't want to have expensive chicks free-ranging at that age. There are always a couple losses.

Depending on how big your rabbit area is, she might be quite content to brood in there, at least to start. The rabbits probably won't mind, although you can cross that bridge when you need to, if they do.

I make the assumption that you marked the eggs that are being sat in the regular nest boxes, so you can pull new eggs every day.

Wishy-washy people are making me twitchy. If you make plans to buy something...chickens, a car, I don't care....make the plans FIRM so the seller knows exactly what you are doing and when. I am very tired of "maybe", and "about", and then people showing up wondering why I'm not home, or wondering why I no longer have what they were interested in. Telling me "maybe" is not firm. I might sell those birds to someone who can make a commitment, while you're hemming and hawing. Telling me you'll show up "about" noon is not 2:00 pm. I'll be gone by then. Get firm. Make commitments. Then stand by them. And don't TELL me when you are coming. ASK if it works for me, too. I have a job. I have errands to run. I have a life. It does not revolve around Your schedule, as much as I'd like it to.

I could go on, but I'll keep this rant short. Rant, rant, rant.

So, what is your rant today? (Yeah, I know...go ahead and rant against ranty people!)

I agree 100%!!!! I have wasted too much time waiting for people to call back, come by, etc.
