Good morning folks

another sunshiny day to putter and putz outside. I need to remember to
water the grass and trees today.........getting crispy out there again.
Why is it the grass and trees need watered but weeds grow and grow and grow?
I know the answer but it's just frustrating. I'd try bees but would have to plant
flowers and such for them which means more watering.

hope everyone has a good day.

Let me recommend a book to you!

Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Homescale Permaculture

It has detailed information for helping your plants not need to be watered and be relatively drought resistant (along with a ton of other fun permaculture stuff)
I've really enjoyed reading it. :)

Hope you have a great day also....and you are right about the weeeeeeeeeds.....and onions.....!!!! They are green...grass is starting to go down. I'm taking the ladder out to the shed today and see if I have the logical reasoning to put the roof on permanently.

Have the panels up there temporarily and weighted down but the hurricane is gone....so now I need to do this. Take care of yourself...

Hi,
How long would it take for grown hens to learn the nipple system? My hens make a mess of their water and I have back trouble so need something I can fill from the top. It would be cleanner. If I could fill from a hose it would be great. Does anyone have a setup that I could see a picture of. Do they require cleanning often. Right now I have peck buckets. They are a hassle and I do not want to give up on having chickens. Any advice for taking care of chickens as we age that will make it easier will be appreciated. Thanks

I don't have nipples, but I do have a system that is easy on me. I have pickle barrels at each chicken house, raised up on blocks or a platform. Then hoses run from it into each house, to an automatic dog bowl. I keep a brush hanging in there, and can quickly swish out the bowl (which is also on a concrete block to keep trash out). The barrel gets filled with a hose once a week. In winter the mechanism in the bowls will freeze, so I remove those and switch to open bowls then. It's not so cold here that the barrel doesn't thaw during the day to allow refreezing...usually! There were days this winter that I had to haul water, but it's not common!

I took out the original waterer (that kept getting so messy) and hung the nipple bucket, flipped my finger on the nipple to let them notice the water that dripped......and that was it !! So it took about 5 minutes !!

My chickens make a mess of their water....and food. I blame myself as the feeder is a hanging one that I have yet to hang. It's also undersized as they are now just about full grown chickens and no longer chicks.
We are adding the run to the coop this weekend, so it will be a good time for upgrading the feeder and watering situation. I'm considering going the 5 gallon bucket with nipples route. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
