I really don't where to start. I have a rir hen that a lady gave me. I have two silver lace dotts sisters that a friend gave me then I saved a 5 month old white leghorn roo from a cullin. Should I just pick a bread and stick with it or just see what will happen with what I got. I need to decide cause Fred the roo will be ready to start doing what Roos do soon.

I say roll with what you got and if you hatch any eggs is what kinda colors you'll get plus meat/ egg production rates. Since your roo is a leghorn thats a duel purpose breed. And bred to rir ( good eggs) and dotts ( duel purpose) the chicks my be very versatile.

Leghorns are not a dual purpose breed, they are egg production. That's why a lot of production type hybrids from a hatchery have leghorn somewhere in the back ground. The RIR and Wyandottes are dual purpose breeds.

Hi y'all! It's been a long time since I've been on here. Life has been so CRAZY lately!

Quick update on what's been happening here: Back in May, I took a class and got certified for FAMACHA for goats and sheep, so that when we get sheep (hubby wants goats), I'll be better able to know what to look for health-wise. We also got our first set of meat birds (Heritage Whites) the first week in May (or last week in April???) and have processed all but three of them already. Hoping these three will produce a few fertile eggs for us so we don't have to keep buying from a hatchery.

In July we got a GP dog to be our LGD. He's 6 years old and wonderful! We are all in love with him, even my DH who typically doesn't like dogs. The middle-ish of July we were given an Americana roo that my DHs cousin couldn't keep (they live in town, so no roos for them). We're going to be keeping him and selling two of our EEs that are father and son, since they're related to almost every hen we currently have, once his quarantine time is up.

On Sunday we were given some roosters that my friend didn't want, they're in quarantine now. We're going to sell two of them, and keep one. The two we're going to sell are sons of my current EE roo. We gave some hatching eggs to my friend, and she got some roos as well as pullets, but had enough roos already, so gave us back the two she didn't want. She also gave us what she says is a roo that came from a Lavender Orpington father and a White Maran mother. I'm not sure if that's what he really is. She's 100% positive of the mother, but not positive of the father. I'll post a picture of him.

To get a barred bird...you USUALLY have to have one of the parents barred.

ETA: OR the barring could have come from the Marans. But find out if they have any barred roosters 1st.

Lol! That's what I was thinking! She does have some either Barreds or Dominiques (it was dark and I couldn't see very well), but she said that those ones were in a separate pen, and couldn't have bred the Marans hen.

ETA: I forgot to mention that he has feathering on his legs and feet, not a lot, but it's there...

ETA #2: I just spoke with the previous owner, she said that the Lavender roo was the only roo she had at the time of incubation. She didn't get the Barreds until after this guy hatched.

Good morning folks

I drive for more than one school and while one is already open
and have students going and has since the 6th, the traditional
calendar schools start next week. I'm sure lots are getting excited
about the start of school and some not so much. I'm hoping for a
good year with very few problems but already the stop sign on
my bus has been passed four times. Luckily the child had not
walked across the road yet. Be watchful folks....kids will be out
there soon.

Do you drive for all grades? Or just one segment of the school system (ie, elementary, junior or high school)? And does your route take you into Fayetteville, or are you far enough north of there that you don't have to deal with the congestion of a larger town?

Oh, and originally I came on here to say...I got up early enough to watch the chickens this morning...I have 10 chicks, 3 bantam ameracaunas, 3 bantam cochin and 4 silkies. I know that the cochins are 1 rooster, 2 hens. The silkies, I watched both black ones crow this morning. And the ameracaunas, the one gray one crowed. Still waiting for the two black ameracaunas to make a declaration. The AM and Cochin are all 11 - 14 weeks, the silkies are around 17 weeks.

At least I know that one silkie is a hen and 2 cochin. . But as long as everyone continues to get along, they are all staying. It isn't as if I bought bantams for their outstanding egg production

I drive for Douglas Byrd Middle School and Howard Health and Life Science High
which is one of the college program high schools so I drive a college route for the
to FTCC. I am all over the southern part of Fayetteville all day long. I o get a decent
lunch break. Just this morning....again.....car fly past the bus with the stop sign out
and lit up.....folks just don't care....until they hit a child.....then it's all "I didn't mean to".
