Welcome to the new folks!
We're putting the last of the meat birds in the freezer tomorrow. We had planned on doing them in small batches over many weeks. The first batch was just a bit bigger than game hen size, the second batch I did split in half. The rest are so huge that I am afraid if we don't do them all tomorrow they will die before the next weekend. They'll break their legs from the weight! So tomorrow I'll be busy processing chickens.
I seriously need an increase in egg production from my girls. I explained to them about chicken soup, and the Buff Orpingtons listened well. The Welsummers didn't pay attention. I'll have another discussion with them today. Same for the EEs and Ameraucanas. They picked up a bit, but not enough. Another talk is due.
Hope you all enjoy the holiday weekend. Stay safe!
I've got a girl with vent gleet. Gonna go get some yogurt in the morning. Anymore suggestions ?
I just realized how long its been since I was on last. Welcome everyone who is knew and hey again everyone else.
Sometime in the past two to three weeks everyone is wanting our eggs! Our girls can't keep up!! So my mom and I managed to get our hands on some welsummers. 6 Hens and a Rooster. They are two years old, but the guy only free ranged them (he didn't feed them like laying pellets are anything, just vegetables and whatever bugs they could find. They are not entirely people oriented (which is a must at our place lol). I've managed to get the hens to warm up to a us a little and eat out of my hands! My deleware managed to help make them see I wasn't evil and that I gave them food. I'm most likely going to get rid of the rooster though because he's a pretty big spaz, he's not mean just he is most definitely not a fan of people and acts like he's going to die. We have two little wellie cockerels in our juvenile detention pen and will be keeping one of them.
However, I think some of the new Welsummers are eating their eggs. I keep finding broken egg shells in their coop. If they continue then does anyone have any tips on how to stop them... I've heard not being fed well enough can cause eggs to start eating eggs and wondering if that is a possibility.
If I find anymore broken and eaten eggs I'm going to try the mustard trick with blowing out eggs and filling them with mustard.
Oh and we got a new coop!!!!!! I have to take some pictures for you guys![]()
