Hello hellooo hellooo echo

It got quiet in here, Hope all is well and it nothing more then the feasting and festivities keeping you busy.

This weather has me looking ahead, I plan to add some more birds and need to expand now anyway. I see some use more then one coop with large pen or free range. Weighting the options build a larger coop for all of them, or 2 smaller ones. First it easier to scrounge smaller stuff, budget the big obstetrical.
I am expanding the secure pen to 15 X 35 adding access too pasture to free range. The 4x6 raised coop is barely big enough now. If I built a one bird coop would the boys move? any way I should see what I can find for building materials, Humm how big was them pallets I saw?

Both ways have their pros and cons. With multiple pens, you have more feeding/watering stations to attend to. On the other hand, your breeds are always separated into breeding groups, and you can rotate who gets wormed when instead of having to do them all at once. I have several pens, but consolidate for the winter when the cocks are less prone to fighting. I put most of the boys into one pen, and all the girls with a couple boys for security in the biggest chicken house. That gives me only two pens during winter, when I might have to haul water from the house. I'll be splitting them back into breeding groups before winter is over, though, so it's a temporary consolidation. It does give me a much needed respite though. And the empty pens get a thorough cleaning and re-sanding while unoccupied.

If I had the land and the money...... I have my perfect set-up in my head. But I'll have to win the lottery to build it!

Too quiet! Yes Cough, cough!!!! all day today and yesterday, the flu is making the rounds really quick and hard on the coast of NC. My Br, hb, me, my granddaughter too, its a bad one. I had the flu shot and so did the others but we still caught it. Wrong flu shot type this yr.
Yes" if wishes were horses we would all take ride" on the new coop deal. I am pretty happy with coop its self but I would have put it a more open spot.
It would be put it in the winter sun and summer shade. There would be more glass windows for natural light also. Unfortunately that is not possible right now.
I hope everyone else had a wonderful Christmas and great New Year!

We are planning on re-doing our pens and most will be smaller breeding pens that will be covered
and hopefully songbird proof. All that have we read lately implies that many of the illnesses and diseases
the chickens MAY get COULD be carried on wildlife. We are NOT interested in eliminating the wildlife
so we will try to simply keep them away from the chickens. There will be no free ranging as it could
expose the chickens to those diseases. We are also going to try for a resistant flock. I am not saying
anyone should try to eliminate any wildlife, just opposite. We should learn how to live with what nature
provides as it is all needed for a healthy eco-system. Hope everyone has a good time with their chickens.

Hello, all!

I'm on the coast, in Wilmington. For the last 7 years I've had a job that required constant domestic and international travel. So when I got abruptly grounded last March, my number one silver lining was that I got to keep chickens again. We repurposed half of an existing storage building, and my (awesome and cloneworthy) husband and I built a fortress-like chickenyard. We have nine pullets, and got our first egg on Christmas Eve!

I've discovered we're part of a growing contingent of stealth chicken-keepers in our neighborhood.

Hi !

I'm in central NC, near Asheboro. I also have Fort Knox for a coop. NOTHING will get in. I'm waiting on the netting and my run will also be
like Fort Knox. I hate Hawks, Coons Cats, Dogs etc. My chickens will be safe, and I may let them roam for a while when I'm at home and
can be with them.

Welcome to the NC group gfiman and johanssonmel......glad to meet you
