Started my first-ever incubated eggs in my new (used) incubator! It's just a barnyard mix from a local farm as a test hatch. I don't plan on keeping any of them, but might use them at my gardening class at an Elementary School. Then they'll all have to find new homes for Valentines! :)
Even though I'm not keeping them, I'm still super excited!!

Good morning folks

Good Morning all! hope everyone has a wonderful wednesday!

My sebright is my only bantam, and is getting picked on by my standard size girlies. I am hoping to get her a couple of bantam buddies... and am looking for sebrights... however, i am having trouble finding sebrights close to her age.

Do you think that she would bond with any bantam breed? or is it really 'birds of a feather'?

I would like to know your thoughts/experiences!

thanks so much!

Good morning all! Two days in a row in the 60s...Wahoo. This makes me think of spring, and new chickens. I would like to get a couple of Silkies, and a couple of Polish pullets in the spring. Maybe I should say a few of each.

I have relatives from Wilmington to Mt. Airy, so I can pick them up. Any suggestions?

Any bantam would work, just keep in mind that not all bantams are equal in size (bantams of a large fowl breed are 1/3 the size of their large fowl counter part).

Good morning! Welcome to all the new folks!!

I think the weather changes have affected my flock in terms of breeding behavior. The cocks are fighting much earlier than usual, so I'm going to have to do some separating to keep them from killing each other. I also need to reduce their numbers some more. Since it's going to be a nice day and I get off work right after lunch, I'll be starting to get the empty pens ready for re-occupation. I'd like to get the Welsummers into one breeding pen, as those boys are getting the dickens beat out of them by the Marans! And I may reopen the furthest pen and move all the pullets into it, as it's not currently divided; they'll have more room. Problem would be water when it freezes, which is why I emptied that pen for the winter. Still, it's already late January, so I don't anticipate too many days where I actually have to carry water instead of just breaking ice in the morning. We shall see! This is earlier than past years, but it is what it is. Can't let the boys in the bachelor pen kill each other!

I'm getting 12 Welsummer day olds in March. Are they pretty laid back and gentle birds, in your opinion?
