My egg production has doubled since last week! Last night I was up to 6 eggs :) Should be interesting to see how my Brahma crosses end up laying when they should be mature enough to start laying regularly.

mossfarm, congrats on the new girls...they are so pretty! Are you starting a Brahma flock?

Thank you for the suggestion. I haven't been able to do that as of yet. I will keep trying! Internet searches aren't very helpful it seems because there aren't many hatcheries and feed mills around here :( And they don't advertise well if they are.

I'm getting 12 Welsummer day olds in March. Are they pretty laid back and gentle birds, in your opinion?
They are bossy little nags, is what they are! They will be up under your feet, telling you to hurry up with their treats, jumping up and down to tug on the hem of your shirt to hurry you along. Or they'll be expecting you to hand feed them their treats, like my Silly. I love the pesky things!

I've been working with http://www.littlebirdiehatchery.com/ and they have been wonderful!
I've not gotten any chicks from them yet... need to finish the coop first :)

Also, depending on the breed, you can look up the livestock conservancy (based out of Raleigh- or somewhere close-ish to that). they have a list of breeders as well.

Good morning! Welcome to all the new folks!!

I think the weather changes have affected my flock in terms of breeding behavior. The cocks are fighting much earlier than usual, so I'm going to have to do some separating to keep them from killing each other. I also need to reduce their numbers some more. Since it's going to be a nice day and I get off work right after lunch, I'll be starting to get the empty pens ready for re-occupation. I'd like to get the Welsummers into one breeding pen, as those boys are getting the dickens beat out of them by the Marans! And I may reopen the furthest pen and move all the pullets into it, as it's not currently divided; they'll have more room. Problem would be water when it freezes, which is why I emptied that pen for the winter. Still, it's already late January, so I don't anticipate too many days where I actually have to carry water instead of just breaking ice in the morning. We shall see! This is earlier than past years, but it is what it is. Can't let the boys in the bachelor pen kill each other
The tom turkeys have started to strut and all. I have been hearing the male pheasant calling as well. My roosters on the other hand are DOA.

I believe I am. I really like the gentle giants. Its hard to locate a buff though.

This describes my olive eggers perfectly!! I have not had welsummers before but these little olive eggers are welsummer mixes. They are so goofy. They like to sit on my shoulders and taunt the cats too.
