Wow, great progress in one day!

Yes is was. I'm off the rest of the week going to try and finish it by Sunday night. I'm going to get the roof on tomorrow and start the siding. I want it dried in tomorrow before the rain comes. Need to find some cheap window. Going to make the doors myself. I have great help my 7 & 10 year old boys and my lovely wife.

I've been working with http://www.littlebirdiehatchery.com/ and they have been wonderful!
I've not gotten any chicks from them yet... need to finish the coop first :)

Also, depending on the breed, you can look up the livestock conservancy (based out of Raleigh- or somewhere close-ish to that). they have a list of breeders as well.

I get my Mule City Layer feed from LBH. My chickens don't really care for the large dark pellets. They tend to eat all around them, then pulverize them and spread the pellet dust into the dirt. On the other hand, they go crazy for the Dumor stuff from TSC! I've just finished off my first 5 gallon bucket of fermented oats from TSC. It's horse grain. I had to ferment it in the house during that crazy cold spell but it only smelled sour when I took the lid off for the chooks.

My 6 chickens came from LBH. I started with 8. Had 2 cockerels in the bunch, wasn't able to verify until they were 3 days past return policy. Gave the Brahma cock to a friend, kept the EE cock for myself (he's quiet and not mean so far). I sold one of the EE's because they made a mistake and accidentally sold me an extra EE and not a Silver laced wyandotte. All the chicks were lively, I had one die within 24 hours, and there was no problem replacing it. I have 2 BA, 1 GLW, 1 Dellie, 1 EE and they are all now online and laying. I'm pretty happy. My next crew will be breeder birds.

I looked on their website, and I think Pittsboro is the closest to the Piedmont. Don't remember the name of the store, but you can look at their Mule City's website for a list of distributors.

Good morning folks

It's been some nice days lately weather-wise....sure hope the
weekend is too. Getting to be time to think about the garden
area and what gets planted where.....we do rotate where the
tomatoes and peppers are planted each year. I need to find a
few places to plant some squash but not in the garden.

hope everyone has a good day

Good morning, all! Looks like a cold sky outside my door, but the chookies don't mind. :) We're finishing the chicken wire on the top of the pen, and then my DH gets a much needed rest from my chicken renovations. He's a good man!

Time to get out the paper and plan the garden and grow out pen locations. I'm planning to plant some grasses for the birds, as well as getting a small load of stable stall cleanings for the chooks to work on.

Good day, stay safe and warm and dry!

Cheap windows! Find a Re-Store near you. We had to ask at ours, because they keep them out back and we had to be escorted, but $5-$10 for a double hung window. We put them in backwards, so we can open and close them from outside the building and not have to climb over perches. (After the first building went up. We learned from that one.) And we replace the screen with hardware cloth to keep out things that like to eat chickens a little better. Works great for us. Hope you can find what you want.

Also, Lowe's has metal brackets for making doors and gates that make it quick and square. Hubby was making our doors nicely, but when he found those he started replacing everything! They cost about $10 for one set of four. Not sure you can see the hardware in this pic, but it's what I've got at work. Metal extends along all boards, and then has the cross angle for support. Makes squaring the door easy-peasy. The cross angle doesn't interfere with a pophole, either, even for the big English Orpingtons. They have no problem with it.

Thanks. Wonder if habitat for humanity has windows? Found some shingles for $13 bundle that's $10 cheaper than lowes. Did the door hardware come in a kit ?

Oooh, I've seen the metal bracket isle at Home Depot, but hadn't thought to use them for my doors. Thanks for the tip! I'll have four doors on my new coop (four pens for four breeds), so anything to make it easier will be nice! :)

Moss Farm

I have seen those door kits at HD, Lowes, and the local hardware store. They come with all the brackets and braces just cut your boards to what ever size you want screw it together, just about squares itself. I have used them before to make gates and shed doors.
