North Carolina

Thanks StarMe and FVRM. These are my first chickens and maybe I'm not really sure how to expect the roosters to act. I'm comfortable and confident around animals and (in my head anyway!) don't come across as timid or fearful, but I've had a hell of a time with my roos. We started off with 27 birds- 4...oops, that's a 5th! roosters and 22 hens. Five roosters were WAY too many and fighting too much, so the Welsummer roo and a silver laced polish were dinner. They went first because both of them had a go at me multiple times too. Now I've got this giant Austra roo going at me and occasionally the other little oops SLP roo. Our easter egger boy is very stand-off-ish, but has never shown the slightest inclination to bother me, and in fact seems to intercept the other two roos when they start to get their hackles up at me. All the birds were day-olds from a hatchery and have been hand raised, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. It seems unlikely that all but 1 rooster would be aggressive. Do I cull all but that one? Sigh. Maybe I'll figure it out one day. That's why the "gentle" bielefelder sounds wonderful! But with DoubleA's info, it sounds like that might not be the solution I want either. Thanks for the input, everyone!!!

Generally, hatcheries breed for production first, not temperament. You can still get nice friendly chickens from hatchery stock but there will be mean ones too. It's best to get them from someone that has been breeding for good temperament for at least a few generations, regardless of breed.

Okay, here's my PSA:
I'm updating new snow map forecast. The latest data and trends point to a widespread 6 to 10" snow...storm from parts of Alabama Georgia to Carolinas and Virginia now. The RAP and NAM are both excellent short term tools and are increasing amounts drastically--on top of what was already slated to be a big event. In some areas this will be a devastating snowstorm, with tree falls and roof collapses, and power outages.
Ths is no ordinary dry powdery snow. This is extremely WET , heavy snow. The problems will come from too much falling too fast---simple as that. The trees won't be able to slough off the snow in time, when it's falling at up to 2" per hour (in some areas). That's why I'm extremely concerned especially north side of Birmingham and Atlanta to all of Upstate South Carolina, through interior NC and southeast Quadrant of Virginia, where now Richmond is in line for bigger totals than thought. A 6" storm is manageable, but when 8" or more of this Cement falls in a very short time like this one will, then power issues arise FAST. And there could be over a FOOT in parts of the Carolinas and possibly part of GA, AR, VA as well.

Keep this in mind for your coops/tarps, etc...it wasn't something I thought about much until I saw this forecast!
Thanks for the reminder. LOL!!! I'd forgotten that I'd had such a hard time getting into the run with just ONE inch on the ground. I just went out and rigged up a tarp in a sloping angle hoping that the snow will just slide down away from the door. This is why I had wanted my husband to put the door to open out but he thought he knew best. Oh well. I'll see how well the tarp works.

Quote: We had the same issue with our Buff Orp roo years ago. He constantly would chase down my nephew who lived here anytime he saw him in the yard. Even if he was acre from the chickens when the roo spotted him. And he'd never bothered the chickens to earn that kind of treatment. Turned me off of the breed completely. My Lavender Orp was the same way last year before I gave him away. Never a problem from my Augsburger roo in that area. I'll stick with that breed for my roos.

So, since a few folks have mentioned the Smithfield show...
Will anyone be bringing gold laced Orps to sell (or be willing to)? I'm just looking for ONE pullet or hen (not chicks).

I've a friend coming up from Florida soon. I just messaged her to see if she has any GL left to sell. If she does, I'll have her message you on here. We'll be coming up to the Raleigh area while she's here anyway.

Nope. She shipped the last of them out on Tuesday! Just missed. Sorry to get your hopes up!

And we DO need to meet anyway! Besides, some of my favorite people I met on here. That includes the woman coming to visit from Florida. Lots of folk in this room, too. Have enjoyed meeting every single one, and some have become good friends.

Too bad... I'm sure I'll find one somewhere! If I don't in a few weeks, I'll have to settle for hatching eggs...

Snowing in Ramseur. It looks like a couple inches already and still coming down. Some of my chickens don't mind the snow, and some refuse to walk on it! They will come out if there is a bare spot to land on! No bare spots tomorrow! LET IT SNOW...LET IT SNOW...LET IT SNOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
