We have been getting a mix here so far. The chickens don't like it very much. The easter eggers are a bit more adventurous than the rest.

Here they are exploring yesterday's snow.

So, since a few folks have mentioned the Smithfield show...
Will anyone be bringing gold laced Orps to sell (or be willing to)? I'm just looking for ONE pullet or hen (not chicks).

Not sure what will be outside for sale, as people can bring what they want to sell and it is a case of the early bird gets the worm. The inside sale area is a silent auction type thing and they end towards the end of the show and everyone has a chance at them.

Good luck finding your bird.

Good morning folks and welcome to the new folks

It is a bit windy out there this morning so I am hoping there
are no icy spots to slide on. I hope everyone got through the
weather with no bad incidents. Our birds are older but they
managed the be just fine with the weather although a rooster
or two may end up with a little frost bitten combs from the
winter temps...........they will survive.

hope everyone has a good day

The snow stuck onto the fencing of the chicken run and the netting on top. Along the sides, you can't look inside at all and once in the run you can't stand up except the very edges. The 8 foot top is at about 3 feet from the ground now being weighed down by the wet snow. Obviously, that means that the sides are bowing inward. Hope the wood doesn't snap.
In any way, I'm glad I made a tent with a tarp around the door last night. Otherwise I would have never gotten in to water the chickens. About three of them were hanging out under it to avoid the snow, the rest were staying inside. LOL!!! None of my animals like snow. Not even my dog. He'll have major cabin fever by lunch.

Take care of yourself first!  I'm very glad you didn't break anything!  I have a neuromuscular disorder, so have the balance issues that go with that.  One thing I've found very, very, very helpful is a muck tub cart.  Instead of lifting and pushing as with a wheelbarrow, you push down and then forward.  I use it for everything.  It would work nicely for firewood, too.  There are several types on the market.  The simpler one that TSC sells is the one I have.  Wouldn't trade it for anything.

Be careful out there!

X2! The ones ar TSC have a handle and should be able to be pulled one- handed. I think Sam's Club had some last year, too. Be safe!

GAH!!!! While we didn't get much except al LOT of rain, the Durham/Raleigh area got 8 inches of snow. My son just moved there from Boone. He prepared for a Boone-type snow/power outage/recovery. That would have been great...if he was in Boone. But he's in Durham. They lost power around midnight. He's only got enough propane for his heater to last another four hours; maybe less. Two of his snakes are due any day now, and need to stay warm or he could lose both litters.

So his best buddy from here who has 4-wheel drive has loaded up our generator, gas cans, extension cords, and an electric heater to haul up there for him.

When these snakes are born and he sells him, he'd best buy a generator!

I'd complain elsewhere, but this is the only part of my world that he is not also a part of. It's not that he didn't prepare...he just didn't think about changing circumstance.

In chicken news, I'm glad we put that couple inches of sand in the pullet house, plus the new layer of leaves. Their house is in the middle of a pond for the first time ever! A couple of wet spots inside even, but overall it's not bad. I'll put down deeper sand this summer. Although it might not happen again. Hubby had re-routed a drainage pipe, which is likely what caused this. He's going to re-re-route it as soon as he can. In the meantime, I gave them extra scratch.

Enjoy the day!

6 inches in King!

It is a beautiful site this morning, all of the trees are completely covered in snow...a northerner's delight!

I love a pretty snow covering.. did not effect my chickens, they are still in a brooder, 2 weeks old and growing so fast!!
