Super excited our coop and run are almost done! Which is great because the chicks are growing up fast!

My Father-in-Law told us a story this weekend that I thought y'all would thoroughly enjoy:

~The Blue Eyed Alagaster~
This guy I work with is one of those fellers that anything you've done, he's done it twice and got a trophy for it. Well, his son bought himself a chicken the other week, and it died, so the guy got him a nice looking Rhode Island Red rooster to replace it, and now he's an expert on chickens. He was going on and on about chickens, so this ol' country boy tells him a story-
"When I was a young'un, we had this Blue Eyed Alagaster. I could whistle and it would hop up on the handlebars of my bicycle and ride around with me."
"Really? I think I remember hearing about them!"
It was all I could do to keep from busting out laughing... I had to just walk away! Anyway, first break rolls around and I overhear him talking to someone else.
"I think I remember my Granny having one of those..."
I just looked at the country boy, and he smiled a little smile. At lunch, someone else was sure their Mama had raised a flock when they were kids, and by second break there was someone out towards the coast that breeds them! I asked the country boy how long he was going to let them carry on with this, and he replied "I dunno... another guy believed one of my stories for a good five years..."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So anyway, if anyone calls you up asking if you have any Blue Eyed Alagasters, you'll know why!
For those folks looking for new stock...........
Flock swaps are good places to find chickens of many different breeds and ages.
I plan on going to the Cedar Creek swap next Saturday and will bring some pullets
and laying hens. Some will be Olive Eggers and EEs. I will most likely have some
hatching eggs too. Of course all depends on the weather.
BHep also may have some Silkie eggs for anyone looking.
Good morning folks
I do wish the rain would happen during the week and not
on weekends so I can get some things done on those few
days off. I am all for having the rain as we do need it. There
wasn't enough last year and our hay man has run out of hay
already so we are hunting for some in the Fayetteville area.
If you know of some send me a pm please.
hope everyone has a good day
Monday!! The start of a new week! Yay!
It's awesome, because this is the last week of classes for us!! Next week is finals! Almost done, and I can't wait! I'll have a lot of work to do in the summer, but it will be on MY schedule, not theirs, and it won't involve a couple hundred other people. This has been a rough semester, and I'm really looking forward to summer. Really.
In chicken news, my last hatch for a month is underway!! Next weekend I'll gather for my Buff Orpingtons, and then the only hatches I'll be doing the rest of the summer will be GCM test crosses. I love the chicks, but they are a lot of work. I did huge hatches this spring, because I've decided to rotate out hens every fall, as soon as the new pullets start laying. 1/3 to 1/2 of the flock. Haven't decided how drastic I want to get on that. There's about 90 hens out there now. With the hatch I did this spring, I can do half, plus increase the flock a bit. I'd like to keep about 30 birds per breed, with three of them cocks. I keep Buff Orps, Welsummers, Golden Cuckoo Marans, and have just added Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas this spring, plus a general layer pen for my olive eggers and eye candy hens. Last year I didn't raise enough replacement birds, and didn't have nearly enough eggs over the winter. I need pullets that start laying just before it gets cold, so they lay through the winter. On the other hand, egg customers basically competing for eggs over the winter brought out a whole new batch of customers, and we are now selling nearly the State limit each week! And those are all large or bigger. I hold back mediums and below for our own use, or the occasional give-away. I still end up cooking and freezing 8-10 dozen of those weekly for winter dog breakfasts. It's working out well!
Hope your day is good and the week gets even better!
I don't know if you have a Southern States nearby, but if you don't mind paying a little more, they have decent squares..I buy the timothy/grass bales and they run 7$ a bale (they're pretty heavy ).. one bale lasts me about a day n half with 2 horses..Standlee forage also has a variety of hay pellets (grass, timothy, alfalfa and some that are a combo), and they work great to stretch bales or as a holdover until you can find flakes.. (just make sure to soak the pellets and then soak again for good measure).
I'm sure prices are different down there than they are here but had issues mid winter with our hay guy going MIA so found out the hard (and expensive ) way.. TSC carries the Standlee products..they also sell an actual bale but it's tiny and grossly over priced (around 12$ for a bale that's about 1 ft wide x 2 feet long) so pointless unless you're feeding one rabbit..lol
What a long day! Was off work, so finally got my back yard raised bed garden done. Took me almost all day! And I was an idiot and forgot my sunscreen and got fried like a piece of bacon:-/ The girls enjoyed all the worms I dug out. Hopefully I'll be able to keep them out of the garden this summer:)
And today was the first day I got an egg from all four of the girls! I'm so blessed with my little back yard flock:)
