here's my son with one of the new Polish chicks. Probably goes without saying that they are spoiled.

Hi everyone! I'm new to this thread and pretty new to this site! But I'm soooo addicted to chickens! I just love them! We live out in Aberdeen. I was so happy to see a NC thread especially if it helps finding hatching eggs that I can go pick up. So far I don't seem to be having the best of hatch rates with shipped eggs, :( but then again I just starting chicken raising this spring. Hoping my next hatch goes better in the next few days. Questions for all of you that have a walk in hen house. Do you open and closes the chicken door (leading to enclosed run) from inside the coop, or outside? I have it on the inside right now, but I am thinking of changing it to the outside bc when they go in at night I don't like disturbing them. Thoughts?

Welcome to the forum!

I have walk-in chicken houses, thanks to my awesome husband! They are each set up just a bit differently though. Some I close the door to the pastures from the inside and some the outside. They all have at least one door that opens to the yard, with the exception of Grow-out. Then they have a second door to pasture. Again, Grow-out is different. They don't have pasture access all the time, but a run that goes around the garden. (We call it the chicken moat). With others, I enter through the door to the yard, close the back door to the pasture, collect eggs and close the yard door on the way out. They know it's me, so aren't much disturbed.

My hatchery chicks came in earlier than expected, and I was wanting to graft them to one of my broodies. I had a lot going on today, though, so it was a fail. However, I didn't have time to walk the broody back out to her pen from the Juvenile Detention Center, so tucked her into Grow-out next door. I realized after I left that there are no accessible nest boxes there! Sure enough...she's on a perch tonight! Woohoo! Easy way to break the broodies, maybe. I brought up another this evening, and will bring the others up tomorrow. Yay!

I was wondering if anyone has any standard size Cochins around the Fayetteville area? We have bantam Cochins amoung several other breeds but I am desperately wanting some larger fowl in the mix. Thank you in advance for any advice or help.

If Jackson Springs isn't too far from you, then I know a LF Cochin breeder out there who has beautiful Cochins and she takes really good care of her birds! I love my Cochins! I'm in Aberdeen and she's like a 20 min drive for me if that helps :)

:D They are so fun to watch, I love the feathered feet! The Cochin breeder I got mine from also gave me some eggs to hatch and I got 6 chicks! But then my toddler got a hold of one :( Now I just gotta see who's a boy an who's a girl! If you ever want any, lmk and I can give you her info.
