Am I the only one who feels like it would be intruding for the state and government to know that I have chickens in the backyard of my own home?

Absolutely not. There was another thread somewhere on this forum where a person had received hatching eggs from a hatchery where some of the birds tested positive for avian influenza (not the same birds that laid the eggs that were shipped, by the way). Those eggs had not yet hatched and were kept indoors away from the person's flock. The government came and destroyed the eggs. That much makes sense. Then they tested the outdoor flock that had not come into contact with the eggs. They tested negative, but the government folks came back to destroy the flock anyway. Although the person ended up getting to keep the healthy flock, it was *really* close. They had the depopulation scheduled and everything, and it was only thanks to a big media circus that the flock was not destroyed.

I understand there are legit reasons to want to know where chickens are located... and if I thought my flock had avian influenza, I would have them destroyed in a heartbeat. But this kind of crud does not exactly instill confidence, for me.

Hey all, so I've had some eggs shipped in here and there from safe places and haven't had any issues with the post office calling me to pick up the eggs bc that's what I read on here was the best thing to do. The seller gets my number and writes on the box and my mail lady calls me just fine. Well last week I had to reorder a couple different ones and when I went to pick up the first package the desk mail clerk told me he didn't think I was supposed to be called because it's only priority 2day and not express. Also he said there is an additional charge to have it held for pick up and he said that service was not paid for, since it takes time out for him to have to call me to come down and get my package. So yesterday my last package came in and my mail lady came to my door to deliver and apologized bc the desk mail clerk wrote a note and taped it to the box that as stated earlier my packages will no longer be held for pick up bc it wasn't paid for. Has anyone been told this before?? My mail lady said to file a complaint bc she never had a problem calling me for hold for pick up and to let the supervisor know what happened to get to the bottom of this bc she wasn't aware of an additional charge for it. Besides when someone sells eggs on here or eBay they never mention paying an additional fee ontop of shipping for hold for pick up fee?!?!!! Any info or experience would be appreciated!

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried the tricide-neo powder for bumblefoot? There's a thread about how well it works and I'd really like to avoid surgery on our poor chicken. We just got her today and noticed her foot. The people we got her from have so many chickens running around they'd never noticed it of course. Luckily, she isn't limping and gets around fine but I've heard how awful it can end up!

Hello everyone, I'm a relative newbie in Winston Salem. We had chickens when I was a teenager but I swore I'd NEVER have farm animals or live in the country. So much for that... I now live in the country, have 2 1/2 acres, a huge garden, and 39 chicks with more on the way this week!

I work part time as a mail carrier...And I hold my customers packages all the time. So I think th post master is incorrect. Could you mmail carrier call you directly when they arrive? I call several of my costomers on my route to determine what to do with their packages.
If that won't work, have your mail held the days you think eggs might arrive, then just go pick up the mail.

Oh yes, my mail carrier is awesome. She is the one that usually does call me and has no problem with it! It was just that other guy raising a fuss. My mail carrier is the one who wants me to get it cleared up with the supervisor, so that guy doesn't say anything anymore.

Well, I'm kind of in the same boat... I understand the purpose of "registering" and the state just wants to be able to inform owners if there's an outbreak, but I am not sure what I think about all that. I feel like it's really no business in the government to know whether or not I have chickens in my backyard. Call it paranoia, but this country has really taken a turn for the worse in the past several years (much the reason why we have debated on doing a tiny home after the kids grow up).

Am I the only one who feels like it would be intruding for the state and government to know that I have chickens in the backyard of my own home?

It is a voluntary sign up, although they are encouraging it. . The purpose is so you can be notified if there is an outbreak in your area. AI is expected to come through our area in fall with the migratory birds. If you are in the NPIP program, you do not need to register as the state already knows where you are located, The state testers are advising to continue to use strict bio- security measures. No one in you birds area.

Please read..before you get up in arms about something that is put in place for the protection of our birds. If..IF you are in an area that is infected by AI, this will save the state time and money to come test your birds. All birds infected, tested positive will have to be euthanized to stop this disease. This program is not intended to "get in your business". It is intended to keep our state AI clean.

Ok, so there are apparently two separate items that are able to be registered for: an NC Farm ID number and a National Premises ID Number. If you click the "More Info" link on the page of the link that you provided it'll take you to a more descriptive article about what is going on. The second paragraph clearly states: "The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is requiring all poultry owners, regardless of the number of birds, to register for an NCFarmID number" and it also states "Poultry owners can also sign up for a national premises ID number, but it is not required". I understand the initial 'purpose' of registering your flock, whether it's two chickens or two dozen chickens, but with the track record of this country and where things have been going... this is only the beginning to, probably, worse things to come. I'm not the only one making a big deal and "up in arms" about it. If the government can ultimately control the food and what we're allowed to have on our property, it can and will control the people. Let me put it this way: I'll register my pets when I finally decide to register my guns... which is never. People that are so easily swayed by the government and do not do anything to stand up for their right and freedoms are Sheeple (which is becoming more of a contracted "disease" than the avian flu because of how the media distorts and manipulates news in order to get the masses to agree or disagree on something). If my birds are healthy, in which I plan to keep them that way, then I don't have to worry about them being culled. If I'm registered and an outbreak happens near me, who's to say that the FDA won't send their posse out to my address and destroy my flock regardless of testing positive or negative? So anyway, to reiterate: I have read the article, and I have clicked through the separate sections and have read those as well. If I am misunderstanding something, I am all ears because I want to be properly informed. However, from what I've read this is not "voluntary" and it doesn't matter how many chickens someone has; everyone must register who has chickens, turkeys, etc. If people are that naive to think this is just to "help poultry owners be informed and one step ahead if there's an outbreak", they are sadly mistaken.
