Welcome to Rainbow's Roost! Hubby finally got the coop close enough to done that we could put the girls in there last night. We had planned on finishing last weekend but had to attend a funeral instead. Of course this weekend is the coldest we have had yet. He has a lot he still wants to do, but for all intents and purposes my girls now have a home! I am so happy!

We put them in about 10:30 last night, so far they seem to have done very well. Only 3 of the 8 are brave enough to come out yet. Please excuse the mess we didn't stay up to clean up lol.

But...But if they're still using plastic shower curtains for protection from the weather, does that make them 'hobos'?

Well at least scottcaddy, they have moved on from my garage, to a shantytown in the driveway lol. Oh and decided to just zip tie blue tarps up for windbreaks, so it looks reeeeeeal nice lol

I'm not sure if you're set on the black copper coloration, but I'm in Raleigh, and have blue and splash marans. If you're interested, I would be happy to sell you some eggs or hatch a few chicks once my birds finish molting and resume their egg laying.

Hey! We put blue tarps on the wire parts of all our chicken houses in the winter. It works. We like what works. We need the air flow in summer far more than we need good looks in winter!

Wow, Everybody's awful quiet

good morning! Hope everyone is doing fine, and just busy. We are settled in for rain for a few days so thought I would pop on here and see how everyone is.

Quiet it has been. I've had nothing much to say lately...so didn't.

This is the last week of classes and next week is finals. I'm already exhausted and looking forward to the end of the semester.

I'm going to start hatching the first of the year, if the chickens cooperate. Also going to order some extra pullets so I'll have layers next winter. I'll probably cut down on the older birds a bit once summer comes. I need to stick to my plan to rotate out one third of the girls each year, but I haven't done it. With the egg prices up due to the AI I've needed all my girls so didn't sell any of them, except to two people: One who drives across the state to get birds from me almost every year, and one who bought out my BBS English Orpingtons when I decided to quit breeding them. Otherwise everything stayed.

I'll definitely increase the Cream Legbars and Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas. Eventually I'll have to choose one of those breeds to continue with and pass the other breed on, but in the meantime, I'll increase both flocks. Same with the Wellies. I guess it's my oddball girls and surplus EEs/OEs that will be going. And some Buff Orpington hens. Decisions, decisions.

The calves are a month old now and growing well. They come running when they hear my voice, hoping for extra bottles. Planning on trying a couple pigs on pasture next summer too, along with the calves. I'm not sure if the pastures we have will support them all, so I may have to make some changes. I can relocate some chickens and give over chicken pasture to pigs if need be. We will see. My parents raised pigs when I was a kid, but I have not. This will be a first for me.

Okay, there's my update. Anyone else wanna update?
