Need some help/suggestions. I finished my chicken coop. It is 44feet long and 12 foot wide. I have made 7 different 6x12 lots out of it. How many chickens can it lot hold. They will be in it all the time.

Are they coops with open runs, or all coop? Pictures may help. The general rule is 4 sq ft per chicken in the hen house/coop and 10 sq ft per chicken in the run.

old blue - What do you mean by LOTS? not sure I understand ....so these chickens will have no access to a run or free range? Not recommended - they need fresh air and sunshine. More sun, more eggs, too. That is a huge coop, but considering you won't be letting them out, I would say no more than 25 - 30 chickens, and that might be a little crowded. Please be careful not to crowd them if they are not getting outside - the added stress will bring undesirable behaviors such as pecking, lowered resistance to disease and pests, etc. Can you post pictures?

My first large fowl Cochins! I did not know they were so big! The roo is about 15 pounds.

How old are your giant Cochins? I bought one as a chick and she's currently about 10 months. Bigger than a bantam, but still not very heavy. My ameracaunas weigh a lot mor

A lot depends on age - but if they are staying in all the time I would limit each section to 6-8 birds, depending on size, but less is better. I have a 10 x 20 area that houses 14 birds, but we let them free range during he day. The penned in area is pretty torn up though, just from pacing in the morning before we let them out. We have a 10 x 10 area with 8 birds. It could probably go up to 10, but it would get crowded.

If the birds just sleep in the coop they don't need as much space

Here's a pic of my lot. I put plastic over the wire to help with the cold in the winter. It will be off when spring is here.
