Hopefully the ban will be over as scheduled on Jan 15th.  That being said, there are very few swaps during the winter months.  Come March show season in NC starts.  There are spring shows in Salisbury(Mar 5), Smithfield(Mar 12), Winston-Salem(Mar 26), and Greensboro(Apr 9).  These are the normal dates for the yearly spring shows, so no guarantee they are happening this year.  Just have to wait for the announcements.

The largest swap in NC(NOT show) of the year is Chickenstock.  The last one was in Taylorsville.  Not sure if there will be a spring one.

Hello everyone. I have a new username.

I am sbrooks88. I lost all of my passwords and stuff when I broke my phone a few weeks ago.

so I have a question. I have an older Orpington hen who has been having a tough time later. I can't get her to gain any weight at all. She eats a lot. And seems very happy but the last few days I have noticed her left eye keeps getting all gunked shut. I have to put a warm cloth on her eye to loosen the gunk in order to open it for her. Almost every night now before I go to bed I have to do this.

what am I supposed to do? I have been giving duramycin-10 in her water in case of it's an infection. And keeping her in the house and out of the cold. Any ideas on what to give her both for her "cold" and to put some weight on her? Btw she went missing a few months ago and that's when she lost all her weight. She was gone for about a week.

We've had a hen with a gunky/foamy eye. I read about Tylan for that - It can be very upsetting to the GI-tract and we gave the first couple doses by injection. Weight loss is concerning for potential parasites/worms too. We had a rooster that would not gain weight after an URI, and at necroscopy, the intestines were filled with worms. Worm treatment is 2 phases, first to take out worms and second to take out larvae. There is a lot of discussion on this forum - we used wazine 17 for 1 day in the water followed by topical/dermal Ivermectin 2 weeks later. Its probably best to keep this chicken separated from the others

How much does that cost? And do they sell it at tractor supply? Her eye is swollen again tonight but not gunked shut. Giving duramycin again until I can get to the store for more mess.

Finally, no rain, got my big pen moved to the farm so time to get birds back to normal. Now to get back to the nursery and landscape business. Sold all of my roosters so I have pen space for a few more hens and a couple of pens for???. I think In need to fine a couple of leghorns and a couple more prolific layers to bump up egg production for customers..

It's supposed to get down to 14 degrees tonight! This is the coldest my chickens have experienced. I have clear plastic all around their pen, and their coop is sheltered on 3 sides, so I think they'll be fine, but I'm not looking forward to trudging out to give them unfrozen water first thing in the morning! I'll have to set up the coffee pot first, for sure. Do you all do anything special to prepare for the freezing winter nights?

Hey @marsha tutterow my step great grandma lives in Mocksville, Bardee Anderson off of Half Mile Rd (i think thats the name of it) and then one of my friend's family owns the Horn oil company. I am in need of an SQ black silkie roo for my cuckoo sizzle project. Do you have any available, probably not until spring though.

It was 13 last night in the mountains where we are. I believe it will drop even lower tonight. I have a completely enclosed coop for my chickens. However, it's not insulated. I am pretty sure they can tolerate even colder temperatures, but I like to make them as comfortable as possible. Last winter I used an electric heater on cold nights. This year I've tried a red heating brooder lamp that I used for my chicks last spring. It does keep the temperature a few degrees warmer than outside. I use a heated base (had to make an investment) for their waterer, which is very convenient, since it only comes on when the surrounding temperature falls below freezing and keeps their water from freezing without heating the water. So, my chickens are very well taken care of, though my rooster still managed to freeze one of his wattles, it's already black. Unfortunately, I don't know how to prevent that, since it happens when they go out in the morning before it warms up. I still have to go out and take care of my turkeys that were not really a planned addition, so they don't have any conveniences aside from a tarp over their heads and a place above ground to perch on, so they are pretty much in the open, and I have to get them warm water in the morning to keep it from freezing before the air warms up. I am not looking forward to it lol.
