Yes I am aware of this, but that is to a degree "genetic modification" or artificial selection(without the breakdown of actual genomes). Trust me I am not one of those people who protests this kind of stuff. Although I am sure that actual genetic modification has been tested on animals. I hope that is not what I am eating. I am going to be studying the growth rate and effects of different environments on these birds varying in different strands. I want to compare the difference between a good quality heritage breed and the modern commercial breed used in poultry houses.Chickens are not genetically modified. They are mixed breeds that were chosen because they suited a specific need. Some chickens grow faster and some lay better if bred with another breed, thats all
Carolina Town and Country is a good choice - they also get vaccinated chicks. The chicks there always seem happier than the ones at TSC too. They have a printed schedule now with weekly shipments forecasted out until the 25th of May! If you are ever interested in mixed breed hatching eggs/chicks from a diverse flock - let me know - we're in Sanford. When do they typically hold "Chick Days"? I asked in our TSC yesterday and the employees didn't know! I don't know what's going on, but it seems that ever since they rebuilt the TSC in Sanford, NC (the one that was destroyed by the tornado on April 16th, 2011), the folks they have hired are not helpful nor friendly. I'd rather travel 50-100 miles out of my way to go to one of the older ones I used to get things from years ago. I was, however, told I could go online and make an order there and have it delivered to the store in Sanford (??chicks???)...
I think I'll stick with getting my chicks from private owners/breeders here on NC/BYC forum and from a different feed store (Carolina Town & Country) in Sanford that already has had a wide selection of chicks arrive. I purchased 6 SLW 2 weeks ago and had 1 not make it the first night, but during the storm w/o power last weekend, I moved the 5 remaining into the house in the kitchen area next to the den w/ the fireplace and wrapped the brooder in towels to retain warmth for the 18 hours we were w/o power (shed where they were went down to single digits inside). THEY ALL MADE it - even tho the house was NOT warm by any stretch (double layers in comfy clothes and lots of blankies on our bed that night!).
Nice selection of new chicks yesterday at CTC, but I'm getting 4 from another source this afternoon, so can't get any from the store...![]()
I was at the Barnyard Auction in Broadway, NC and there I think there was a lady who was looking to sell an entire flock of Lavender AM birds and has several eggs (Not to sell at the auction, but has them for sale). Sadly, I don't have the name/contact information or where exactly in NC they are- but if you send a PM, I could post an "wanted" ad for you at Southern States - maybe it could help?I know I haven't been on in a while but work and the farm has kept me VERY busy.
Right now, I'm looking for:
- Splash AM eggs, chicks, pullets, hens, roosters
- Lavender AM eggs, chicks, pullets, hens, roosters
- Black Bresse eggs, chicks, pullets, hens
- Black AM pullets, hens
- Barred Rock or Delaware hens
- Welsummer Roosters
