Hey y'all.

Nope, I don't have any purple chickens, or chickens at all just yet. You can bet when I do that y'all will be seeing pictures everywhere. lol I was reading about different breeds and it said that Orps can have purple sheen, which isn't wanted, so they're culled. Then found a picture somewhere of a purple-looking one that came from breeding black ones, so that was it and I fell in love.

) Figured it would be a good idea to get people thinking about purple - in case y'all see any - so that y'all can let me know. lol

My dad went to NC State, but my love is the Carolina Panthers. I'm so happy they let Jake go. He's a great guy, but we need a great QB. Here's to yet another rebuilding year. lol

WOW, am I all alone on this end of our fair state?

I'm in Dare County. On Roanoke Island, Manteo to be exact. Site of the first English Child Born in the New World. Home of The Lost Colony--America's longest running outdoor symphonic drama. Our two daughters are in the show (they are there performing as I type this).

We started our flock back in Sept. with 3 Production Red and 3 Black Sex Link hens. Then a friend gave us 3 chicks from his Perdue grower farm (Sadly we have only one left). And I got 24 chicks for Mother's Day. Yep, chicken math at work here!

If anyone vacationing on the Outer Banks decides to come see The Lost Colony, come to the concession stand and say "hello". I'm there every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday!

You know I have lived here since 1991 and have only been to the beach (Emerald Isle) once. I've never been to Myrtle Beach either. We usually head for the mountains. No sharks in the mountain lakes, lol

Hi NCBYCer’s! I’m in Chatham County, about 40 miles due west of Raleigh. Some of you aren’t far from me at all!

We’ve got just shy of 3 wooded acres which means gardening is a challenge. Turns out plants like sunlight. Who knew? But the chickens should like our partly sunny place just fine. The little ones are set to arrive within the week, and their coop is staying nice and cool under the trees despite this heat and humidity.

I just wanted to check in and add my name to the list of amazing chicken fans here in our great state!



@Michelle – we vacation on the Outer Banks every few years. Usually in Corolla. You are sooooo lucky to live out there!!!

!!! Of course the chickens will love the wooded area! If you free range them they'll have all kinds of fun going in the woods scratching up bugs and worms and having awesome fresh dirt baths. If you dont free range, they'll still enjoy the cool shade in summer and the wind protection in winter the trees will offer them.

We are definitely neighbors Marty. I am at the Super Target in Apex at least once a week! I’ve visited your hoop coop page a few times now. Jim is right. It is very impressive!

SOS - I know I can’t free range since our backyard is Red-Tail central. They nest in the trees on the neighboring properties. We also have a pack of coyotes that roams through our area pretty regularly and stray dogs show up now and again. We definitely want to build some hoop tractors, but that won’t be until after the run is finished. I’m inspired by Marty’s work, but mine will probably be more in scale with yours – and hopefully as cost efficient!
