Another NC'er posting under sad circumstances. Hey, I'm Melinda and have been on BYC for over a year, but don't post much. I read a ton and feel like I know many here just by reading.
We had a house fire last week and are not going to be able to go back home again. We've been renting for 8 years in our home and it's the only one we've known for quite sometime. We're dealing with it as we can,and if anyone has moving boxes that they want to get rid of in the Rowan Co area, we'd appreciate it.
We're trying very hard to find a place to rent/ rent to own that I can take the flock along. We have about 50 chickens now and have our own enclosures and runs that can be taken down and moved easily. We just need a place to put them and ourselves quickly. We're not bringing much, and are buying new furniture for the most part, we just need to have a home to go to.
We're currently staying in a motel since we can't live at home and if anyone is in this area and can help out with either looking for a new home, moving boxes or just hugs and talking, I'd appreciate it.

Oh, I forgot to add that we have 6 kittens that are in need of homes also. (I forget a lot of things with the stress.) They're socialized, extremely friendly and completely cute. They are on solid and wet food and are litter box trained. The only two we're keeping are Gizzie and one of the siamese colored ones for an office cat with the new store.
So, we have one orange tabby, one black kitten that has tons of peronality, another buff siamese colored one and a white kitten.
Most are male, but I'll check again to make sure before they are placed. They are all staying with us at the motel right now and while I'll miss them, I can't keep taking care of strays right now other than the ones we already have taken in. They are only here because the momma cat was dropped off pregnant. I haven't had kittens this young in almost 20 years and will hate to see them go, but it's better to place them somewhere safe while they grow up.
Pics are on request on FB since that's the only way I know of to get pics to post with a new cell phone.

Since it's an emergency situation and I haven't gotten thier vaccines yet, they are free to very good homes only to members on here. I know ya'll love your animal family members as much as I do, soI know I can trust you all to give a good home if you're able to.

Mama C- I am in Chatham County as well!! I am very new to chickens (just got our first flock last week) and am enjoying them very much. We have dominiques, about 10-12 wks, 3 hens and 1 rooster. We are also in a very wooded rural area, on about 2 acres.

As for Roanoke Island in Manteo (I LOVE that place) there is a newly opened historic site that I did some consulting work for called "Island Farm" where they have living history interpreters and farm animals. The site was restored and is kept today just as it was during the 1840s, with historically accurate breeds of chickens, of course! They have around 15-20 I think with one rooster. You might catch them roaming around as you drive by the site--occassionally they have gotten into the neighbors yards.

Our 4 little ones are doing good--went up the ramp and into their new coop for bedtime all by themsleves the very first night we had them! Last night with patience and persistence I finally got them to eat out of my hand but they are still very much afraid of me--haven't been able to hold one yet

We were told to keep them in their run for 3-4 weeks before letting them free range, but this morning I heard a loud "bawk" and before I knew it our rooster escaped (sneaky little thing) while I was changing their food and water. It took some time before my husband and I could chase him back into the pen!

Just posted this on Freecycle in my area if anyone is interested. I'm in Gaston County just above Gastonia and west of Charlotte.

I've got about a dozen and a half chickens I'm looking to get rid of. The large Black sex-link hen looks over all of them. She's not laying anymore but is a lovely girl. I think the 3 Red sexlinked girls are all still laying. Silver-laced Wyndottes, EE's, Delewares, and Buttercups are a bit too young yet. Possibly late August. I got them April 2nd. All are big and healthy! I feed them only Purina SunFresh Flock Raiser. It has higher protein levels than Chick Starter. We give the hens crushed oyster shell for calcium for nice hard egg shells. No need to buy different types of feed this way. (Both Dallas Feed and Tractor Suppy have it)

I also have a plastic Log cabin playhouse that has been turned into a chicken coop that you can have. I just finished building it. Vinyl flooring. Sets up on a plastic pallet to help prevent water from seeping in. Still need to seal the top with caulk before winter. Fit a good dozen if you have a place for them to run during the day.It should if in the back of a pick-up truck.

I've decided I want to use my dog kennel runs for my new puppy to run and play instead of her being on the leash all the time. It will keep her safe so she doesn't run out in front of a car she doesn't hear. Would love for somone on here to have these birds.

Hi neighbors, I'm in Raleigh. I'm very interested in retired laying hens and unwanted roos for gourmet culinary purposes, and I can help folks get started processing their own birds if you aren't quite sure how to go about it yet. I love farm fresh chicken, I just don't (currently) live where I can keep any, so I'm always looking for meat-ready animals for my table. Fresh chicken is love!
