Spring? did someone say Spring? dogwoods blooming, red buds blooming, birds singing, warm weather!! won't be long the way the days fly by now....don't you think they go by pretty fast BC?

the older I get...the quicker they pass
I can't wait to see my flowerbeds in bloom again

I use to have beautiful flower beds, but since I have my chickens and ducks not so much, but thats okay, I started planting shrubs and so far they don't mess with them too much. Still miss all the beauty of the spring months though, but they are freash in my mind and on my computer where I store my pic.s so I just go there and dream. So nice. I miss being able to go out and visit with my birds though it's way too cold to do that for very long,

My birds don't free range, so the flowerbeds stay intact.....they ALL have outside runs to play in though. Have to admit, I have relocated several large beds so that I'd have more room to build chicken houses.
One of the reasons I heat the barn is so that it's still warm enough for me to sit out there with the birds and just watch them, groom them, play with them. Plus, this past summer, we had a huge sliding glass door installed in the den so I can sit at the computer and still see 2 of my Silkie runs...my husband is such a wonderful man

Sounds like he is, is he feeling better? I am looking at the flat heated mats for next winter when I get my new Silkies

I have heard alot of people with Silkies say they don't like to roost is that right?

When they're young, up to about the age of 4 mths, they will sometimes roost about 6 inches off the ground. I've never had an adult Silkie that would roost, or show any inclination that it wanted to. You're right---they can't fly...they can "jump" up and flap their wings, but that's all.

We were going to switch to those flat panel heaters this winter, but time slipped away from us again...lol. I think they'd be alot safer, cleaner, and the birds can snuggle up to them without getting burned....I think they're more economical too.

Glad to hear he's better. 20 hrs thats alot of sleep, thank goodness you use to be a nurse, but I guess once a nurse always a nurse. I was looking on shop the coop.com and they carry them but I will look around before I buy one. what I like about it is they said the water won't freeze either so they must heat pretty good. and the bedding can be put on top of it, pretty cool actually.
