Junkmanme's fake headline reminded me of the all time greatest line from "WKRP in Cicinanti" (pardon my spelling):

"With God as my witness.... I thought turkeys could fly!"--Mr. Carlson

If you don't recall the episode, news reporter Les Nesman had just finished a vivid commentary about the Thanksgiving Give Away turkeys being thrown out of the helicopter to the people waiting in the parking lot below. Seems it was similar to the Hindenberg tape, but TONS funnier!

But then, "Oh, the humanity!" gets used by anyone in this family that feels they are being oppressed. That started after Middle Child was in the school puppet play and her character said it. They had been urging her to "project" her voice, so she used her "fighting with and yelling at sister" voice. I cracked up so bad every time she had a line, I had to tell her principal what my problem was. They all knew Big Sister, so I was forgiven my outbursts.

Also, I pity any new person just coming to this list. Em is NOT mass farming emus. Or turkeys. Or mutant, radioactive chickens. But you guys DO make me look forward to reading this thread when it shows up in my email! I'll go back to lurking just over ten miles from the border of NC/VA.

Let me preface this by saying I am new to this as well, but I have been researching coops for the last 3 mos and began mine this weekend. As far as not providing heat, I would at least insulate the walls and ceiling if you can. I know we dont get many stretchs of multiple sub freezing days, but we do get them and everything I've read says that this is tuff on all but the hartiest breeds. One other note is good cross ventilation capability of the coop. Our Temps change SO dramaticly from am to pm around here it needs to be versatile. Honestly, I'm sure the above info is somewhat remedial but it helped me...

Anyways, good luck with picking out breeds. I hear Orps are really good mommies...

Miss Lydia, I feel better the less sleep I've had. At the show, I'd slept an hour the night before. I can overdo it though, and then I get loopy and weird...ER than I already am.

Gold Griffin, I only mass farm fish. Emu are hatched to order.

Cochin hens make good mothers to. I never insulated the walls, I have always heard if you insulate than you will have problems with humidity. Not sure tho

I have seen a heat pad that you attached to the wall, this is what I intend to install for my Silkies for next winter..... And power etc to Chez Silkie.... Maybe 52" LED television with cable... what more can they ask for?

Hey Junkmanme, can't say my ducks had that problem up here at the house but if they'd been down at the river below us they would have. That was cute.. and I was looking at your album and saw some pretty birds. Had a question since we've been talking alot about Em and her Emus, was that am Emu standing on the back of that ther chicken? and kept looking for the wabbits picture and never did see it, did the Emu get it or was it last nights dinner? And was that you in the picture [the caretaker]? and now I know why your called Junkmanme!!
