North Carolina

I only said borrow so that I could "quietly" convince my husband to speed things up.

Also, I can't get chickens until I know what kind to get...there are SO MANY to chose from
wee.gif
, I'm thinking I want two of each, but then again...our coop isn't THAT big...

I have had people tell me that Orpingtons (sp??) are the ones I NEED to get...then others tell me bantams and still other silkies and such. I haven't done enough reading to know what a bantam is or a silkie
jumpy.gif
...I definitely don't want something that I don't know what it is...then again...that could be fun too.

So much information...I'm still trying to process it all.

I raise bantam orpingtons, they are just like the large orpingtons just a bit smaller. They are round little fluff balls that lay rather nice size eggs for bantams.

You will just have to do some research and see what will fit you needs.

Thanks for your info... They are PQ for sure, I was aware of that, but had hoped for solid colors. I am having a hard time selling them. Everyone around here wants white.

The buff is also PQ from the same seller. ... they are scrawny little things. I put them all in a seperate pen, I thought they were getting runoff from their food. They have been seperate now for 1 1/2 months, plus they freerange all day. I wormed them in Jan. 2x as recommended, dusted & sprayed for bugs. I am thinking they are just poor quailty. I have hatchery Silkies that look better then them. Its a shame....they are real...real in your lap friendly. My kids have talked me into keeping the buff, thats their favorite color. So we will keep them for cutiness. The others are going to the auction tomorrow, someone will take them.

Now is buff an approved show color? My DD loves that color. I like black...but I will let her choose. Any recommendations where I could get some SQ Silkies? Do you show? Sell?

I am doing my reading/researching today (or as much as can be crammed into a day)
he.gif
so long as I don't forget what I am reading, and a certain little baby girl of mine lets me do reading (we're officially crawling and thus into EVERYTHING)
hu.gif
assuming I can get my reading done ... be prepared for the LONG list of wants...

Bhep...you know you are really making it HARD on me to get the coop built BEFORE I start accumulating the chickens.
wink.png
Although, I think I might have to start with older chickens ... then work my way up to the younger ones. What do you all think? Hmmm...come to think of it, will I need to heat the coop in the winter? Just thought of that, since there's no electricity out that way. Wow...need MORE research and to wait for your Cochins to grow up a bit before I take them...ALL!!
lau.gif
You already know they're my weakness...no fair!!

Homesteader, I live in the northern mtns and don't use heat. Just be sure you look for hardy birds, there are some breeds that don't do well in cold climates. Now where are those pictures HT? I am still waiting on pics of my 3 girls, they'll be grown before I get to see them..
caf.gif
I have been doing alot of reading too Homesteader, I'm getting some orps. from HT and didn't know much about them but They sound like they'll fit in nicely here..

"
and you know it depends on what you want your chickens for, do you want meat/egg birds or either one? do you want chickens that are just for cuteness ? theres lots of breeds you just have to make your list then sit down and start you research, then just start narrowing the list down.. or you could do like BHep[ she probably has many of each because she can't stop hatching...
