I hadn't told anyone I was getting some chicks from you, so that's why I said you "spoiled" the surprise.

Praying they all come out fine from the "shuffling" of chicks!!

You have two types of orpingtons (acutally three), American Standard and English Standard (from the UK) and then just hatchery quality. My blacks are a high % English Blood. They are much bigger all the way around than the American style orpingtons.

we still haven't settled on a coop design yet (I did my part...I picked out colors.

). Are they usually gentle/docile?

I better ask my husband before I get too involved. He'd KILL me if he'd have to expand on a coop he hasn't built yet.

Are they docile? I go see them and i get them sat on my lap or shoulders! They are good egg layers from 6 months onwards, see my byc page and you can see them all!

Hi all!

NH - you have lots of exciting stuff goin on! I'm jealous that you've already got chicks on hold for you!!! And all of you guys with little ones better keep us newbies posted with your *extras*!!!

Exciting progress over here in Apex - I've ordered an incubator!!!

I am so excited! I'll let you all know what eggs I get and we'll see how my newbie hatch goes. If I get lucky maybe I'll have too many for my small backyard flock and have some babes to offer myself! Or better yet to chick-trade to better diversify my porfolio, so to say!

Loved all the pics of the babes - both the poultry and human varieties!!

Oh, and NH, so jealous of your gigantic coop plans with your fancy concrete and seperate broody/rooster quarters! You are going to have room for A LOT of chickens!!! Jealous!!!

Coop progress slowly but surely coming along. Big plans for the weekend with the beautiful weather we're supposed to have!

Good luck with all of the hatches underway and keep the pics comin!!!!

SCM.....Yup!!! You will be a hatchaholic in no time. Don't say I didn't warn you. I do NOT want to be accused of being an enabler..

I can give you some barnyard mix eggs if you want to do a test run. I have a bunch of silkie mix & bantam mix egg in now and fertility is pretty good. I even pulled some out of the fridge and they are developing.

I figure I will grow them out a bit, see what I get and want to keep, then sell the rest at the auction.
