Call your permit department for your city or county. Here in Virginia the magic words are "I'm building a POLE BARN..." A pole barn, if I understand correctly, uses poles set in the ground so it is more stable. Here in Suffolk in the agriculture zones we don't need a permit for pole barns. I just had to be aware where my septic tank and drain field were. I've called the utility company (Miss Utility?) to mark all the lines on my farmette. My back triangle is utility free, so I can sink fence poles and barn poles ALL over the place, lol.

Look inside your phone book and find the company that marks your lines. Tell them they need to mark your entire property because you don't know exactly where you want that barn YET. It depends upon the buried lines, duh! I also said I was planning to plant a bunch of trees, but I couldn't give any exact locations because I had no clue what utilities run in my front yard (phone and power, opposite sides I've learned).

See, you're lucky! You found BYC and people that have already done this stuff can help you. I muddled around for about a year before my brother started sending me BYC links.

Good luck!

think My Andi might have a sour or packed crop. Thought she looked a lil funny yesterday. Hopefully it will be better today, if not... I'm gonna be calling for a meeting of the Minds! I have watched the surgery video, and am sure I could do it. But can I on my bird? I don't for sure have an extra $200. This is my worst fear. I can fix alot, but life is different. Be back soon!

Hope everyone enjoyed beautiful day yesterday my kinda day.

, I had two hens stolen two or three years ago. I since pad lock all my birds, because they tried to get my buff polish roo but only got all of his tail feathers:mad:. Hopefully you can find him or the person/people that did this. It's odd that the small ones are stolen. None of my big birds were taken, and I haven't read of anything else being stolen just silkies. Once again sorry for your loss.

I have a black silkie hen whom is older, her face has turned white. Dose anyone know why? I had a splash hen who was a lot older and her face never turned white before she died. Thanks for any help.

Good morning NC peeps! So far it is starting out to be a chilly day, what a shame after such a beautiful day yesterday.

Been pretty good already this morning, sold my cuckoo marans trio.

And realized that one of my remaining pullets looks like she is getting gold around her neck, hoping she is going to turn out to be a gold cuckoo!

I do have a gold cockerel and kept one other pullet, all are French too.

All the new babies are doing well and settled into their brooder great. I took this picture last night of my 4-5 week old black bantam orpington pair. Had someone inquire as they are for sale.

We spent the day yesterday moving juvi's out to the big pen, cleaning indoor runs, rearranging a few other in the barn and doing some spring worming/parasite prevention. At the end of the day it didn't look like we had accomplished much but we know we did.

Thank you for your suggestion GGCM!! Sadly

We will have to have a permit to build the barn!! Any "farm building" (and coops count as farm buildings) that are over 12' in ANY total measurement must have a permit. I even tried to skirt around it by saying we were remodeling and moving the coop that is already located on our property - the one that came with the house. I guess Johnston County is desperate for money because they said there was no permit on file for our house, so the coop that is out there is "illegal" (must be why they hid it in the woods) and since it's not in use we're okay, but if we were to use it we could face big penalties, etc... Good thing we weren't planning on using that one. Oh well. Glad I called though (like you suggested) because if we had built it without the permit, they would have made us tear it down!! I owe you one GGCM for the heads up!! Thank you SO much!!

Dorking Chicks hatched this weekend! I have 22 total. 7 RIR w/out 5 toes, 6 Dorkings with 5 toes, 8 BSL (black sex links) with 5 toes, and one odd white/Ivory with faint stripes with 5 toes! My dorking roosters were bred with Black Sex Link hens, and next incubation project should produce red traits from the RIR.

Anyone local to NC and interested in local pickups/purchases are welcome!
