North Carolina

Hi guys,

thought I would join you fellow North Carolinians here on BYC. I too have had to go out and pick up juvenile chicks and put them in the coop. My first group took 3 weeks before they decided that it was a great place to sleep intsead of the pile of 12 in the corner of the pen. Boy, they didn't like to be move though. the complaining

The newest groups to go out to my new pens learned on their own in 3 or 4 days. I now have been placing the younger ones from the outside brooder in with some older, but still juveniles and they get it very quickly.

Ok experts... Welded wire or hardware cloth? I posted a question on the Coop design/maintenance forum and I was left with more questions than answers...I'm asking you all. Would making a 2' "skirt" of buried wire be a good idea to keep the critters out?

I'm so confused. I just want to keep the little girls/guys (?? don't know yet) safe. Suggestions?? Thanks a million. We're going out on Thursday or Friday to pick the stuff up so I promised the DH I would get an idea for him!!

Edited: for grammar...bah!!

hardware cloth...

For lots of reasons, mostly because it has smaller squares to keep little ones in and little predators out.

I have upgraded mine twice before we did the hardware cloth.... I should have gone that route the first time!

Ruthann.... 2' skirt should be fine. if your chickens are going to be locked up in the coop at night welded wire for the run should be ok. BUT hardware cloth is recommended.
Hardware cloth on windows, vents ect. for sure !!! Even if the windows you got have screen, put hardware cloth over them since they will be open most of the time. Just make sure they are locked up tight EVERY night. If you plan to keep their door open then you NEED hardware cloth. There are too many critters that can get through the welded wire. Especially since you are very rural...

Ended up with 10/12 mixed chicks. We got some VERY interesting colors. They are Silkie hens mixed with ????? GL Polish or Creole OEGB

I know..... I will get pics.

My dh made screen doors for our duck and chicken coops, we used hardware cloth. and used 2 different kinds of bolts for locking up at night. that way we can leave the wooden doors open in the summer for more air flow.
