Hello everyone!! I have been having a blast with my mother in town visiting. She was even brave enough to try and hand feed the chickens, but once they had the "I'm STARVING" rush on her, she "ooohhh'ed" and walked away.

I am happy to report that while the "visitor" kept the "foreman" busy, DH & I were able to get the run completely finished and the final interior door on the right side of the coop!! I will post photos in the future, but I just HAD to let you know that we have spent a lively few days watching the girls & boys dash into the run "fly" around and then dash back into the barn!!

TOO entertaining!! Did I mention that my mother & husband both said... "we need more chickens". I'm still suffering from sticker shock on what the final completion cost of the barn will be!! Haha...then it will be time for another one (you know, so we can get MORE).

On a special side note: CONGRATULATIONS to BHep for her BYC Spirit award!!

she is georgeous online too!! you know what sj maybe we better ask Ht or BHep about this, since I don't hatch in bators or buy hatchery birds, my hens take care of all of this for me, they would know more about when would be better. I sure wouldn't want to say oh yes go ahead and put them out and something happen, They are much more experienced. the day times temps sound good, but not sure about the night temps.

Yes, the maran roos seem to get quite large.........nearly as big as a jersey giant roo.

I had gotten one cuckoo hen before the coppers and then the coppers as chicks. The hubby fell in love with the cuckoo hen as it seems she would whistle to him each evening. First hen in more than 15 years of chickens to whistle to him.

We lost the hen

and he would like more cuckoo hens, especially if they will whistle.
I was thinking a day trip for some birds but I do think Hickory would be more than a day trip as there is NO straight, fast way over there

Will need to think on it a bit.

Good evening to all.

to all the new people which I see are many since my last posting. Very busy in the back yard again this weekend cleaning up downed branches and old wood. Nice big fire in my pit. My rain barrel is up and running (made out of a pickle barrel) fish ponds cleaned with happy fish in them. Only thing left is to re-net the open section of the chicken run pen. It needed to be done better than my first try and it had some storm damage. Love all the pictures. So now on to my serious note. Minnee Pearl my D'uccle ran and sat on my lap tonight and as I was petting and holding her I noticed that her undercarrage was somewhat swollen and gushy. I possibly felt an egg...not sure. I have the pit in my stomach feeling and am having waves of fear because I lost Fritzee to internal egg laying. I have two other of the same and felt their under garments and they did not feel the same. They did enjoy their momma time though.

So when a hen is ready to lay an egg do they get somewhat puffy? You know I will be malesting her every chance I get. I may be having an xray done to let me know for sure an egg is there or not. I would greatly love to hear from you all about this. Minnee is one of my favs that I drove to Whiteville 2 hours and cost more in gas than for her. Okay I am posting so I can hear you advice.
