North Carolina

Good morning everyone. Hope you all are well after the storms!!
Matt,

so sorry to hear about your night!!

I made DH go outside when I saw a storm was coming to shut up the coop for the night (hey, I had to take care of DD, right?? hehe). So glad he did it when he did though because about 2 minutes after he walked back in the house, we had a deluge of rain. It was so heavy you could not see outside at all. In total it only lasted for about 20 minutes but my 6" compost bucket that sits by the back door was filled with water!! I sure hope my garden likes it!!

Sadly, we have decided this fall to start over with our garden area. When we went away for the weekend, the weeds just thrived and now it looks like we have a fenced in grass pile. Some of my herbs are flourishing, but 90% of everything else is struggling. Between the deer and the weeds/grass, I will be surprised if anything grows...although my squash and cucumbers are flowering, which leads me to believe/hope something might happen there!! Vfem....maybe I need gardening lessons.

I did hear about an organic way to prepare the soil for a garden...so DH and I are going to try it. Haha...so if anyone out there has extra newspaper (not the inserts, just the paper)...let me know!!

Okay, enough of my garden sob story!! I do have a question...if my roo is pecking at the back (saddle area, I think it's called....perhaps not) of one of my girls...is this a sign he's thinking of mating or is that just part of the pecking order?? It's the first time I have seen him do something like this. He went after my smallest girl, and jumped/pecked at her. I'm not too concerned as there was no damage done, just didn't know if this was RED FLAG behavior or just normal "kids" stuff. Thanks everyone!!

Morning all

Wish we would have gotten some of that rain you all are talking about. We literally got a couple of drops and that was it.

It got dark and windy and you could hear the thunder but nothing. We held off on watering the garden hoping it would come but nope, nothing. So after dark last night had to go turn on the sprinkler.

I did manage to take a couple of pictures yesterday of my growing Exhibition juvi's. I officially booted all the kids out of the barn to the big pen with their parents. My oldest are now around 12 weeksish and already bigger than their mama's!

Hopefully one or two of the pullets will be ready to show this fall.

I have only 1 "pair" of the juvi's left available and a few extra cockerels if anyone's interested.

These offspring are from my show stock "exhibition". They are 3 times the size of average orpingtons.

I love all my chickens but really ready for the remaining kids to go to new homes.

Yes, they are. It is actually some of their siblings. The available pullet is not as big as the girls pictured but all of the cockerels are going to be chunkers.

I have 7 cockerels left to choose from.
