I have raised mealworms for 3 years now. Right now the 3 bins are full of dead bettles that I need to remove. The bedding should start moving like quicksand in a couple weeks if not already. After another 4-6 weeks I will again have harvesting sized worms. The girls will be very pleased to get the treats again.

ML - Thank you so much for asking!! I am proud to say that I did NOT cry!! I think it was largely because we had company and you know...I had to be strong!!

The BBQ was nice although like always I had WAY TOO much food. I did manage to make a tasty dairy free chocolate cake and some even more amazing Strawberry Sorbet!! It was YUMMY!!

G&A - I have been waiting...WAITING for a sign from one of these girls that they're interested in laying an egg!!
lau.gif
so far nothing!!
gig.gif

I learned a fun fact today!! We are completely OUT of chicken feed so DH suggested while we were out for the BBQ to let them free range. They did WONDERFUL!! To get them back into the coop, all I had to do was "shake" my bag of oats and they came running after me. I did get VERY nervous because the new girls did go into the woods, but came RIGHT back!! Tomorrow I am going to stop and pick up some feed, even though I have 100# of feed scheduled to be picked up on Wed!! We had great weather, great company and lol...I think I lost at least 10 pounds through pure sweat!!
lau.gif
It was rather hot and humid and it was rather uncomfortable. DD had a blast chasing her friend all over the place and they got to play in the sandbox (a first for DD's friend) and after a long rousing play...we all sought out shade as we all started to burn!!
lau.gif
DH and I are talking about fencing in the whole property so we can get a dairy goat (DD is suppose to be able to do raw goat's milk without having a reaction)...I know NOTHING about goats...I feel as if I am an expert in chickens compared to what I know about goats...lol Guess it's time to start stalking the BYH thread!! LOL. I hope you all have a great night!!

what do you all want to know about goats for dairy? i had one, but looked up everything imaginable on them. first you should know how much milk yout going to want a day, as well as what you will be feeding it on, as it effects the milk and taste, unless you just get the pygmy goats to start out to try, as they can eat the nastiest weeds, love them, and still make the sweetest milk, but they dont give more than a pint twice a day (i think,it could be half that), but they are the easiest keepers all around and work well as a meat goat if you ever need the allergy free meat as well (those extra males you cant sell for average of fifty cheap to a hundred, unless just getting rid of kids then not more than fifty, but go quick at twenty five even.). youll need to breed the females to get them to produce, but can get the milk by still leaving the kids to feed or get more by bottle feeding after first couple days to week more, or sell them. i love the fertilizer, weed control, just plain fun and amusement of watching and caring for them, as well as milk and meat. you can house train them as well and teach to not chew on stuff, contrary to belief (mine lived inside loose and slept on my couch and was unaltered Nigerian dwarf buckling, that greeted me at the door just like and with my dogs after a long days work), and can be leash and obedience trained. i never had to tell him anything a half dozen times even, but they will cry horribly if away from you, and or hungry, and are very sociable so always was cuddling something being me or one of the dogs birds or cat (the cat varied in its excitement of this at times). oh yeah, always keep good hay available when not out to forage, as this detours most trouble, poor quality straw type hay or more to all straw, and you will have a tasting everything goat looking for something to nibble on. plastic and metal not good food, but they go for it because they are looking for mineral like would get from natural clay or mineral blocks. occasional little bits of baking soda as well as other things, help prevent stomach issues from feed changes to sudden. it all sounds like alot and you usually can just put them out if past weaning, but i started with tiny sick kid, so needed alot more, and i messed up and did everything backwards and wrong with mine. cows milk is toxic as way to much of something or other as well as rich but can use, but need to cut at least in fourth of what you would think, but the formulas work well, but never tried other % of cows milk than whole milk temp and the condensed goat's milk, which i gave double strength to what i was instructed. poor thing im not sure how it lived for so long.

Thank you Laughingdog!! We are a long way off from actually having a cow or goat yet. I was hoping to be able to find some raw organic milk (unpasteurized...like what the Amish use) - and test it out on myself before testing DD on it. I was very sad to find out here in NC you can only buy raw milk as an animal food and most places don't have/sell it. I guess previously coming from an Amish area, we had better access to raw milk/cream, etc... I hadn't even thought about having to breed the goat to keep her pregnant!!
lau.gif
tells you I haven't looked into it too much yet!!
barnie.gif
so much to learn!! Thank you for your information though, it will help DH and I better decide if we want to take our "farm" to this next step!!

G&A - keep me posted if any of yours start laying!! I have oyster shells out for them to nibble on if they are interested...so far no takers, but who knows I could be missing something!! I checked this morning and still nothing, so I guess we're just on a day by day wait..and I SO HATE waiting!!

I am definitely NOT a patient person. Here is my chance to learn some patience I guess...

Today is my DD's official 1 year birthday and I will admit to being completely emotional about it!! I cannot believe how fast time has flown!! I hope I don't get this way towards my chickens...if so I think DH might opt to move into the shed!!

Have a great day everyone!!

Hi, everybody! I hope you're all well! Happy birthday to you little girl, NH! Congrats on your pea chicks, Bhep - too cute!!! I'm sure I missed a ton while away so

to any new folks and hi to all of you! We were out of town and had lots of stuff going on. We went to DC for the 4th which was such a wonderful way to spend the holiday! We had a blast! And while I was gone the grandparents took care of the chickens and turns out they spoil their grandchickens just as much as their grandkids. I opened a new bag of feed the day we left and when we came home it was nearly gone!!!!!!!!
ep.gif
There is a 1/2 layer of feed on the ground underneath and all around the feeder in the run. Spoiled chickens are dust bathing in their far from free organic chicken feed!!!!!!
he.gif
So I'm with you, Ruthann - about to run out before the Wednesday pick up. I think I'll make it, though. They can always eat the food on the ground, right?? They are chickens after all!!! It's covered so nice and dry under there. Also, the big chickens are now 13+ weeks old and the smaller ones 11 weeks old and I do not have any crowing going on. I KNOW I've got more boys, but nobody is crowing! I'm so new at this I really want to be sure before getting rid of any more boys. Shouldn't they be crowing???? The only two that run around looking like boys with their necks stretched out are the 2 little blue Ameraucana *boys*. None of the older ones act roostery. ????
idunno.gif
Need to take some new pics soon. Also, Bhep and Greeneacres, do you guys have any older pullets or hens for sale? I have a friend who is getting a Carolina Coop delivered at the end of the month and wants a few girls. I will probably give her 1 or 2 of mine but thought I would be more sure about girls vs. boys than I am at this point so am a little reluctant. Let me know! Take care everyone and anyone interested in 2 possible blue Ameraucana boys let me know!!! Have a great day!

yes happy birthday to DD also, as i have heard so much im actually getting fond of the munch kin. on the unpasturized milk thing, the reason you cannot find it commercially is its to much of a risk hassle for producers, as then they have to bother to try to keep the cows healthy from carrying leptospiroses and other usually harmless things to those without weakened immune systems, so if you look up pasturized, its actually the proccess of trying to cook the diseases out of the milk, but takes most to all benaficial stuff out, hence it having to be added, or substituted we are finding nowadays. course more amish natural milk will not have the hormones and antibiotics and such as well, but you might not want to drink any till you ask your doctor if ok, and get specific animals your going to use tested, as some things can cause pregnancy troubles and sickness in small children who are weakened or unaccustomed to it, then you can treat animal and wait period for meds and illness to flush through. yeah, excuse me for throwing some of the concerns and boogedy boogedy and not so fun stuff as some stock might come in sick from crowding and conditions, and should be quarantined to small easy to keep clean area at first anyway, just to be sure, in there, but starting point for more research just to be safe.

Took 28 chickens, 2 ducks & 2 dozen hatching eggs to the auction today, came back with.......................NOTHING !
