I have heard that there is going to be a Swap and Sell for Poultry at the TSC in Statesville tomorrow. I don't know who all with be there or if there will be a good selection or not. NCPoultry2 used to run one there but the man that was running it for our group passed away. I do not know who is running it this time. I heard they have advertised it on the radio and local papers. If anyone is in the area they may want to check it out.

Now my Golden Comets...they are laying machines and haven't missed a beat.

Yesterday I gave my horse a bath, made a big mud puddle and the chickens were wallowing in the puddle like pigs.

If it gets that hot today, I will make them another.

Yesterdays hatch...14 bantam Ameraucanas ( Lav. Black & Splash ) , 2 bantam Cornish, 1 Lav./split to black Silkie, 1 blue Showgirl, 5 GL Polish, 1 mixed ? and 4 tinsie white Quail.

I did hear there is a swap at the TSC in Fuquay today on hwy 401 from 9:30 to 1pm. I won't be able to make it due to work, and I'm still not allowed to drive!

still no eggs.

I am hoping it's because of the heat and not because they just can't/won't. DH and I are looking into possibly processing Cotton-tail next weekend - gives me time to get all the crying out of my system, I guess.

DH had to work today so our plans of going to the store and picking up supplies and then "doing the deed" were put on hold. We watched a youtube video on how to do it, but the one DH found showed a guy (sorry if this is TMI to some of you) slicing the jugular and then poking a knife through the brain and letting it bleed out. His rationale for that was removing the head did something negative to the nervous system...

I couldn't watch that, nor could I watch the process of removing the innards - so I am really not sure how I will do. DH is such a doll, he told me if it was too much for me, he would do it all!!

I love that man!!

I think we will stick to the tried & trusted method...I want this guy to suffer as little as possible!! Is that wrong?

ML - you mentioned a skinning method which is much easier than plucking...care to PM me with instructions?? I am really looking for the best/quickest/least invasive way.

We're trying to stay cool here...hope you all are doing the same. Looking forward to the day when it cools down a bit...I'm a fan of the heat, just not THIS hot!!

So I have been very busy with work recently and haven't had as much time as I usually do to post, and follow etc, but as most of the rest of you are experiencing it is "time to lay" at my farm too...but nothing is really happening. I however woke up this morning unable to find Glenda (my 21 week old Cornish Cross). Hunter usually opens the coop in the mornings and I know she was in there last night so I didn't completely freak out. Glenda is a big girl (12-15 pounds) and there were no feathers (so I knew she hadn't been carried off) She is also the boys favorite (mainly my black australorp Rhett, but occasionally Jack (Americauna) will sneak in a round with her too) and they were carrying on and calling for her too. Well anyways we finally found her underneath a bush in the front yard, away from all the other chickens just sitting there in the shade. She is being abnormally quiet so I brought her inside and she is now asleep at my feet as I am writing. This is my first experience with egg laying and from all I have seen on here and read...they usually make a lot of noise when it is time right? Because Glenda is usually very loud and now she is being the exact opposite. Plus she keeps puffing up her butt like she does when she poops but nothing is happening?? Should I be concerned or just let her be for now?

I live in Surry County which is north of Winston/Kernersville...There are quite a few people in the mountains on here, some down in charlotte/hickory/matthews area and then even more on the east side of the state.

What kind of chickens do you have and how many?
