As predicted... I had a crappy day

Good news, my horse did start drinking and started nibbling on some hay about 7pm. We did get lots of rain and temps cooled down at least 20 degrees. Didn't lose any more birds.

Bad new.... power was out for 4 hours

incubator is full and temps got down to 85.

I had egg in the hatcher, pipped ,zipped & hatching.

Stuck 20 something eggs ( didn't even count) under 2 broody Seramas. Got pecked to death. 2 already hatched and are back in the house, to make room for the rest. As for the rest

Right after I posted I went out. It clouded up. The wind was great. Finally about 7:30 the skies open and the rain poured.

We only got about 1/4 of an inch, but I ain't complaining. I am getting tired of watching rain pass us by. Storms seen to come off the mountain and fall apart just before they get here, then reform for the lower foothills.

If you're having trouble with your flock overheating, then you can try doing what I do: gelatin with canned (or fresh) fruit cocktail. They love it! Plain gelatin works fine so long as it has fruit they have to pick to get to...or there is sugar-free Jell-O you can make. Also, I could suggest refridgerated melon rind/cucumbers. I try to give mine a nice cold treat like this if I see them all out there panting (mine pant even in the shade)...it's too bloody hot here this year.

Hopefully, no one loses anymore birds due to heat.

We had a bear on our deck today, and again I saw it on our dirt road this evening. He is very big. I am a bit worried about the chickens, although I do think the coop is pretty strong, and they are locked in for the night. This bear must be pretty bold, tho, as we have 4 dogs, and one is a HUGE great dane. We are southeast of Asheville.

Have any of you had any trouble with bears getting your chickens?

Egg Update: nothing to update...I think my girls are boys in disguise or something. Only my Marans actually go in the nesting boxes and there are no secret spots behind doors for the girls to be stashing eggs IF they actually were laying.

Lol...on a wedding cake/ baking update... I have only managed to make 1/2 of a tier out of my 9 that I need to be done. I have a hard time justifying turning the oven on for an hour per cake layer!! I do have one wrapped up in the freezer waiting for a bit of cooler/less humid weather to level out and work on. Thankfully this massive project isn't due until September!! Instead, I have my steamer going and I am steaming the squash and sweet potatoes we picked up at the farmer's market. Today's specials are: Rice & Squash medley, Rice & Sweet Potatoes, Spaghetti & Squash, and finally just some finger sized Sweet potatoes. DD already ate one PINT of blueberries for breakfast this morning. I was thinking of freezing some of the blueberries but at the rate she is going...I might run out!!

At least it's healthy!! OOHH, the biggest news of all (only you moms & dads out there can understand the excitement here) DD who is 12mo old...she used the big girl potty today "all by herself" (okay, she signed to me, and I had to help her up and hold her there...but still, she recognized her need and that's good, right?!?)...I am hoping she continues with this interest! I'd love to retire the nappies for a while. Speaking of nappies...I'm off to do laundry!!

Edited: First off, let me say that I think that insults apparently work. Secondly, as I know it is a BYC "tradition" I will PROUDLY post the following photo!!

Guess what I found in the coop this afternoon when I went to check on food/water & everyone!! Don't know who laid it...it's smaller than most of the eggs that I have received from other people, so I do not know...I just know it was NOT in the nesting box and was in the corner, so I can honestly say...since DH has been checking lately for me...I can't say WHEN this puppy was deposited.

Okay, I officially apologize to my girls for calling them useless boys!!

Had a new member join my flock this weekend. Actually 3 in all. But first this is Tilly as I named her. A friend had her along with 20 other hens and 3 roosters and the boys defiently had their favorite. Tilly hid all the time and stopped eating so Lisa asked me if I would take her since I have no roosters. She is already running with my girls and eating and talking up a storm. I guess she has alot to tell.

Tilly even laid an egg yesterday. Hopefuly her feathers will come back. If not a will have to make her protection for the winter and put sun screen on for the summer.

But she is happy. I got two chicks that I still need to get picutres was down with a cold this weekend...yuck in this hot weather. I got a black crested black polish and a silkie americana mix. both very cute. I iwll get pictures tonight. What are Tilly's chances in having her feathers grow back?
