and congrats! Nice to meet ya!

I hope you're all doing well! I've been a busy girl lately and haven't had too much going on chicken-wise, but lots going on with the rest of life! But today I took 3 boys off to their new home in beautiful Bear Creek, North Carolina! I hope they'll be happy in their new home. I'm a little nervous and will miss them and am worrying about them tonight. But, that's what I get for living in a neighborhood I guess!

Vfem, feeling all better? I hope so! My mom just ordered a bunch of goodies from you for my brother's post wedding breakfast brunch and I can't wait to try them! I know they're all going to be delicious!

Bhep - I must have missed it, but how is your horse doing? I hope everyone is well over at your end and that all hatches are going well!

Hope the rest of ya are doing great and I think it's time for everyone to post some recent pics of your flocks!!!

Oh, question - the hard, bare ground in the coop is making me a little crazy. I really need to add a little something in there! I think this fall I'm going to do a big sand area but don't want to do the whole thing in sand. Any suggestions?

Also, chicks now 18 1/2 weeks old so I'm on egg watch. They've been switched to layer and have oyster shell. I can't wait!!!!!

Take care everyone!

welcome-byc.gif
to all the ne folks

SCM... my horse is slowly recovering. He is an old guy in his mid 20's. The cooler weather is helping everyone here. Thanks for asking.
Also...how about a sand box. You can build it just like a raised flower bed. I have seen numerous pictures on here. Also you can grow grass in raised beds with hardware cloth or something over top. The grass grows through but the chickens can't scratch it dead. Saw that on here also.
Hatching away as usual. I have bantam wyandottes hatching tonight and some sizzle and bantam mixes from my birds. I am hoping for a bantam NN frizzle. I think I see one in there.

Honestly I have given up on figuring out what's made itself at home here. We have had almost everything in the book. Coyote, Bear, Dog, Hawk ( didn't do any damage, thankfully! ), Raccoon, and a opossum

I was wondering if maybe a weasel got our kitty?
hu.gif
What ever it was only got him on the neck the rest of him looked fine. I was so upset last night I forgot to mention that my little EE Jewels was taken as well. She was my favorite, she would sit on your shoulder all day if you would let her.

Brie has helped me out a lot. I have been so busy with her and can't focus on all the poor chickens we have lost

She is a cutie right? She is so sweet and laid back! I can't wait to see how big she ends up, her parents were huge!

Night!

i was going to say sounded like a pine martin or some type of weasel that killed the kitteh (take comfort in knowing at least it was instant and painless death), though if had pic of the bite, itd be helpful to id what done it, as well. foxes will drag off with no signs if kitting, though weasels can also, set a live trap with chicken liver to find out, then set a dog at the trap to put the fear they should have, into them, then call off dog and let it out with a large head start, then let the dog chase it into the next county. then, even if was borrowed dog, the smell of it refreshed every so often will keep it away. ive done this when neighbors had problem animals they said were going to drown when caught. its a good excuse to let my do poop and pee in their yard!

i feel bad about your misfortune, as thought something got one of my hens outside, last night, as heard her screaming but quiet and gone without trace when went out. Katamari was sniffing the air and pacing back and fourth, towards woods, so assumed it was the owl i heard hooting that night. she wasnt around anywere all day, but when got back a bit ago, she was looking terrible and just hanging off of perch and feathers messed up, but alive and seeming not hurt to bad to half heartedly try to fuss. il know more in morn, but for now felt no blood, so letting her rest hopefully.

Hello everyone!! Busy week with family here, but I had to check in with my BYC family too!! Chickens are doing very well... laying is still a bit sporadic and tiny eggs, but I guess that's to be expected this early on.

I just have to say SHAME on whomever dropped a very sweet young cat in our woods recently. This poor creature found it's way to the house (it's definitely NOT feral, as it practically jumped into my niece's lap) and tore into our garbage last night. It is STARVING...DH was mad at me, but I HAD to offer it something to eat. I just can't let an animal starve to death and I'd rather feed it cat food than have it destroy my garbage or worse....start looking at my chickens as dinner!! No sign of her this morning, but I really don't know what to do. I can't bring her into the house - I have one VERY territorial male and one aggressive female (aggressive towards other cats). I am afraid to call animal control because I don't want her put down!! Any suggestions out there? It's definitely a female, tiger stripe domestic shorthair. She is super friendly and very young...I'd say a year old or less!! I guess I will just wait and see if she shows up again...maybe she will find her way back home?!?

well if stray cats are left to roam and not fixed immediately and taken inside, or put down, they just breed disease ridden small stock killing nuisances to the rest of us, who might not think a feral cat colony is adorable, especially the scratching, spraying, and pooping everywere all over our properties they wander onto. alot of neighbors out by my family, shoot, drown, put in bags to suffocate, and sack, then beat to death, as those being the nicer ways they dispose of, aside from having "fun" with them, and seen alot more of the latter, especially working for a vet. so if people would think with their hearts for real and of bigger picture, they would see the logic in a quick painless death of the poor one non native stray pest, rather than let hundreds of its offspring or more suffer. people need to start taking real responsibility, and actually think of the animals beyond the immediate adorableness.

SCM, you should be getting eggs real soon, no fretting!!!

And I got your mama's order. I had to laugh because she said 'Lisa' and I know like a gazillion Lisa's so I spent half the night trying to remember who was who and last names. I'm TERRIBLE with last names! HAHAHA Congrats to your brother by the way!

Allabout, you seem to be having my luck, and I just know it will change

Like you, I could not handle another loss!

Ruth, I have to see kitty. She was obviously a pet, and just 'maybe' if you get her fixed and stuff she could be an AWESOME mouser for your garden and home? We turned our cat outside a couple years ago and now she brings me voles as gifts. I couldn't be more grateful as they were destroying my garden. Very useful to have a cat outside, plus she loved the chicken and sleeps in the coop, so she's even some protection for them. Weazels and small animals wouldn't go near the coop at night while she's out preying on things.

I would be concerned that a female cat would probably be pregnant, as that is one of the stupid reasons (IMO) that idiots throw cats out.

You may have just gotten yourself a Livestock Guard Cat. Catch her and get her spayed. Have the vet get her tested for Feline Leukemia and if she is positive, have her put down. It will save her from years of suffering. Your Animal Control may have a low cost spay clinic.

Can your hubby help you build a cat "house" in the corner of the barn? Going vertical would save floor space. Put the litterbox on the ground with cat perches and a bed up high. She will be safe from raccoons and dogs and will get to know your birds. So long as you aren't raising chicks in there, your birds should be big enough to enforce "don't mess with me!"

Anyway, it's a thought. I got three kittens from Amy Nadine in April. I hope they will one day be my yard cats. In the meantime they are still "hawk snack size" at four months old.

Wake County SPCA does VERY low cost spay and neutering and it does matter where you live to participate. It does take a few weeks to get an appointment so keep feeding her to keep her around and if she does get pregnant in the meantime she can still be spayed so long as she isn't ready to deliver.
