I went to the Cabarrus County Fair yesterday with my family, and although I was very impress with the rides and the cleanliness of the fair, I was shocked on how bad some of the birds from the poultry exhibit were.
I can not believe they even allowed unhealthy animals in a public fair like this, packed with small children. There were two turkeys in the front row (with a first place ribbon
) one with badly deform legs (no toes at all) and swollen with leg mites, the other one was crawled into a ball, and barely had any feathers on (people were joking that he was ready for the pot), there was a young rooster with white, mold like, and black spots on his comb, it look like Favus to me, and I understand that can be transmitted to other chickens. I have seen several chickens very anemic in the exhibit, with pale combs, and neurotic head shake (lice or mites if not worst). I have seen one hen with a trimmed beak so bad that her face was disfigured. For anyone who has never had chickens, some of those chickens from exhibit were a huge turn off . It probable made them think that all chickens are nasty.
When you have hundreds of small children going near those cages, I would of think the livestock organizer would care if the chickens exposed are sick or not, as I'm sure those who had healthy birds in the show were not very happy of what was in the cage next to them. That was the WORST poultry exhibit I have ever seen.
