Hey Jl I had one of those, she is now 42years old and all I can say is I'm glad we don't live too close together. It keeps us having a good relationship.

Afternoon all! I keep forgetting to mention that if anyone is in the foothills area the Hickory Tractor Supply will be having a poultry swap the 22nd of this month.

We are extremely good customers of theirs and the mgr. wanted me to help organize one for them so here I am!!

I got to agree......life after they move out is wonderful. Don't get me wrong....I really love my girls but the relationship inprove by great leaps and bounds once they moved out and learned on their own that mom and dad do know what they were talking about and it is REALLY like we said and what we did was from love to gt them ready for life on their own. We had a hard road during those teen years with a couple of them but all lived so not too bad.

We learned to set the line and STICK to it, to set the consequences and make them reasonble..... just like training dogs,cats,horses and any other animal with a thought process....... they will learn the limits.

She's 7 going on 28. She is precocious and just for fun has an IQ 7 points below Mensa level. For comparison, I'm sure I rank toward the bottom. Someday she will make a great psychological inquisitor. I think she could psych anyone into giving up anything and does it on a regular basis. At least she's good at school. As DH says, I'd rather she acts right at school and acts like an idiot at home. As a teacher who deals with other kids acting like idiots all day, I want to reply, why not?? At least I'd get a break sometimes!!

I have not had the best year with my chickens. We've lost some chicks, ended up having that dang dog come and take off with 3 of my birds... including the EE/Cochin cross who was my new fav of all my flocks! Then today I lost my favorite silkie rooster Alpha.

So yesterday he seemed off balance and thin. When I picked him up to check him out, his wings kept limp but he could hold himself upright in my arms. He was drinking and eating and after a minute or two I swore I was just over reacting because he would seem fine. I had my husband look at him and he seemed fine to him too.

Today however when I checked on him he was completely limp, his eyes glazed over and his crop empty. So limp in fact, he didn't appear to be breathing and I thought he was dead. I was holding him on my lap when I was trying to figure out what was wrong, looking for damaged areas or blood. After a minute or 2 he flung himself up trying to look at me and then went limp again. I had my husband looking over him with me while I was whispering "its ok" keeping him calm.

My husband was convinced his neck was broken, but I'm still not sure, he just didn't have strength to hold it up.

My husband put him down, I couldn't watch him suffer like he was and my only suggestion was vitamins or antibiotics. If it was his neck those would have just dragged out the pain. We buried him next to the pond, and I didn't think to get him tested with the ag dept at State. My other chickens are all super healthy and not showing any signs of issues what so ever. I did decide to put some antibiotics in their water for a 3 day treatment just in case.

I ordered some nutri-drench to give them this week... but I'm debating on the wazine dewormer. Its only good for round worm, and I don't see any signs of worms in their poo.

Though I hope this was an isolated incident I'm so emotionally crushed to have lost him, I'm almost at a panic for the rest of my flock.

So RIP Alpha...

Vfem, he was beautiful. I am so sorry for your loss

and grateful for him that you cared enough to make the decision of what to do in his best interest. He had a wonderful caretaker in you.
