Sad news: Amaryllis is no more. She has passed on leaving 3 young babies behind.

NO, amaryllis is not one of my birds. It is an actual amaryllis flower bulb. This was one of the first I got 5 years ago before Christmas. After it bloomed indoors I waited till after the last frost and set it out. Dug it each Fall and set back out in the Spring. This Amaryllis had the darkest deepest red blooms I have ever seen. This past spring it was about the size of a softball when I set it out. Sent out 4 bloom stalks for a beautiful late Spring display. Even though I still can't take a good breath(respiratory infection), Mom and I dug all my flower bulbs yesterday. I slowly went through them today seperating to dry before storage. My big old Amaryllis had a red metal band, so I know which is was. Sometime this summer it must have died. In its place were 3 young bulbs that already have a good start. I seperated them so that they will dry out properly. From loss comes rebirth.

Back to chickens: Just to complain, I have had to get Dovey and JW, young BCLB Dutch pair, out of the cherry each night for the last 2 nights. I don't have the energy for their crap right now, but I can't just leave them up there. A few nights ago I didn't notice that JW wasn't in his house and I guess he slept up there. That was the night that it was windy and rainy. Luckily he is a hardy little fart. That morning he met me before I opened any houses. I never leave any birds out at night. He got lucky something did come through and eat his little 1 pound butt.

Good morning everyone.

Matt, so sorry to hear about your amaryllis bulb! I am glad that she left you a going away present in the form of her shoots. We had to cut down my favorite tree earlier this fall, a Japanese maple we planted the spring after we moved into our house 11 years ago. Something had killed it and less than half the tree was alive. I threw all the seed pockets I could find I to the treed areas of our yard in hopes some might survive to germinate.

SBL. Congrats on such good development! When's hatch day?

Vfem, hope the scrabble night went well and

And so glad the interview goes well! Hope it works out!!!

So happy chicken note - 5 EGGS!!!!!!!!!!! Wooohooo! We gave my parents half a dozen eggs, have been eating tons (though too busy to bake much right now!) and have accumulated 17 eggs!!!!! Totally amazing!!!!

Bad chicken note - terrible fight yesterday!!!!!! Esme (the broody) decided to come out for a bit and Cordelia the EE dared to go in the coop where the babies were and boy did they get into it!!!! Then poor Willow the Welsummer accidentally got caught in the mix. Esme and Willow both had a little speck on their wattles but otherwise they looked ok. Boy did that scare me and I DID NOT like it. Not one bit!!!!!

NH - going to pick up feed tomorrow? I've double booked (dope!) so I haven't figured out yet if I'll be there or can get DH to run over, but maybe!!!

Have a good day!!!

Matt, you tell the most vivid stories and they keep you on your toes.

I think your calling was in writing, you should write some books or short stories!!

I'm sure you could have an entire small library full of just chicken stories.

I have written quite a bit over the years. I used to have a good size box full of stories and a novel I had up to a 3rd draft. I even had an offer from a publisher while at Appstate for a short story. A professor submitted the short story I had written as part of state test. I have the certificate of excellence for it in the box too. I didn't let it go through. I just don't have the courage to let something I write to actually be published to the world.
